Ideal for data viz and spatial analysis

  • August 29, 2017
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Interface is easy to use, especially if you have a background in design software.
What do you dislike about the product?
GUI interface could be a little more friendly to new users.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We're learning which communities are most vulnerable to natural disasters. This provides tremendous benefit to us as we explore how to make communities more resilient.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Fantastic software! I would recommend if you have an institution with a license.

Skip arcGIS. It's an obsolete and sensationally bad software

  • July 26, 2017
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Not much really to like about arcGIS. In my use, I have not liked anything about arcGIS. Even its UI looks like it's from the early 2000s when compared to contemporary applications.

However, arcGIS does have a slew of interesting products for spatial analysis, presentation creation, interactive maps, and website creation that no other competing product has. I have never used these suites but from what I have seen from my colleagues, these elements work decently and produce nice results.
What do you dislike about the product?
It's slow and that's an understatement. I use arcGIS for spatial data work on the rather powerful office machines and it still takes minutes to draw a CSV layer? Using QGIS on my ultrabook, I can perform identical operations in less than a second!

Moreover, it's projection and drawing systems are clunky. It takes me hours (sometimes days) to map layers onto the same projections and even then I frequently do not get the desired result. On the other hand, on an open source software such as QGIS, projections are a minor nuisance and take seconds to resolve (even if you're not familiar with the software).
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I primarily use to assemble spatial data or use spatial files to attach geographical data to non-geocoded data.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
There are other free or substantially cheaper solutions (ie QGIS) that are faster, less buggy, more user-friendly, and easier to use than ArcGIS. Moreover, the transition from arcGIS to these products is easy since the alternatives are quite similar in layout and function (on the surface) to ArcGIS products.

Do yourself a favour, make your life easier and switch away from ArcGIS.

Geospatial analyst/graduate student

  • July 26, 2017
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
This program is incredibly robust and continues to improve with each update. ArcGIS allows the user to complete many analyses and other functions within the program that would have otherwise had to be completed in a separate program with less ease.
What do you dislike about the product?
Some processes can be less than intuitive, but after heavy use and a lot of googling (esri provides a good help forum) the user is typically able to figure it out.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Mapping, geospatial analysis

i amd a student and a research and all of my work is geographically related

  • July 24, 2017

What do you like best about the product?
ease of interoperability between Arc products as well as other products such as excel
What do you dislike about the product?
sometimes I don't know the question to ask as in, the functions are not always named intuitively
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
data analysis, research, the creation of new information, data visualization

I love ArcGIS, it gives me all I need/want for my mapping needs.

  • July 20, 2017
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I like the support system that it comes with. Whenever I have an issue with one of the programs, I can always contact an ESRI representative or look through geonet for help.
What do you dislike about the product?
I haven't quite learned to use ARCGIS Pro which was what ArcGIS is progressing towards. There are still a lot of glitches with this program.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We are creating exhibits for oil and pipeline companies to show if the pipeline lies on private and public properties. The benefits to using ArcGIS is that creating exhibits can be a lot quicker on ArcGIS using data driven pages rather than AutoCAD.

Industry Standard

What do you like best about the product?
ArcGIS is the premier mapping software to use for professional mapping. The package comes with ArcCatalog, which is great for organizing files. There are many ways to use the software, if you can learn how the functions work together. Everything is referenced on a coordinate system, which means everything you do is fundamentally related to the real world. The raster uses and analyses are high-level as well.
What do you dislike about the product?
The program can be error-prone, takes a lot of space, and randomly crash. It can be difficult to change coordinate systems if the data you're starting with has a non-specific coordinate system. There are a lot of uses, which is a double-edges sword: it is easy to learn enough to use in everyday basic applications, but it takes a lot of time and effort to really become an expert in using ArcGIS.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
This helps us map site plans, sampling locations, geology and hydrogeology, and engineered solutions for our clients. The majority of our use is basic two-dimensional problems. The use of layers and geo-databases is extremely important. We could get more use, but without having an expert the use is somewhat limited.

Just too expensive, not practical

  • June 15, 2017
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
The product is easy to learn and use even for beginners. There are wide variety of tools to address many different problems. It is the most widely used Geographic Information System software, hence there are several tutorials and help available online. The large user community is always there to back up questions you may have on different forums, apart from ESRI's own free training materials. Spatial analysis capabilities are top notch. ArcOnline is gaining popularity and the simplicity is attracting more users.
What do you dislike about the product?
Cost - not practical from a developing countries' perspective and the high cost nullifies the benefits it provide, when compared to many open source GIS software available today. It is not the best when it comes to analysis satellite imagery. The software is also quite heavy, to run on a old machine with less RAM could be challenging.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Environmental management, disaster management, health and planning
Recommendations to others considering the product:
I would recommend to consider open source options first before using ArcGIS

Many spatial options in one (sometimes frustrating) package

  • June 01, 2017
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Many easy to find options for analyzing spatial data; great table select features
What do you dislike about the product?
Frequent challenging-to-solve errors; program crashes often
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
(Partially) automating models, analyzing spatial hydrologic raster data
Recommendations to others considering the product:
For large automated processes, consider relying more heavily on python, R, GDAL etc. . Figure out how to automate large numbers of data file downloads (DEM tiles etc.) from government websites. Spend a good quantity of time with the ArcMap before jumping into a project to understand common sources of errors etc., and keep your file storage system very trim and organized in order to reduce errors.
