Spinnaker among other delivery platforms

  • March 20, 2019
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
It supports incremental deployments and supports “green/blue” deployments which are crucial in Agile methodology. Due to cloud deployments, it is easy to manage and configure deployment pipelines.
The best part is easy creation and adjustment of deployment pipelines using a GUI interface.
What do you dislike about the product?
It does not have plugins options like in Jenkins which makes it hard to work with. Secondly, It is not comfortable in managing SCM, thirdly, we sometimes struggle in running tests and building packages. Spinnaker API is more popular than the Spinnaker pipeline to deploy to AWS.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Initially, it was difficult in the client environment to deploy anything as lots of process needs to be followed, but by CI CD, and using Spinnaker deployments are smooth, more than 200+ deployments have been completed in last 6 months. The project is on track and will finish sooner than expected.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Spinnaker helps in deploying a cloud-based delivery model. It makes easier due to application, cluster, and server groups understanding. Overall, it is still grooming and hopefully, Netflix will provide more changes to it.
Nonetheless, it is still an amazing product to try out.

Review for Spinnaker

  • March 19, 2019
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
It combines a powerful and flexible pipeline management system with integrations to the major cloud providers. It creates deployment pipelines that run integration and system tests, spin up and down server groups, and monitor the rollouts.
What do you dislike about the product?
Need to set up in a web UI, so it's little bit hard for setup.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
To define a continuous delivery flow within the pipeline, which allows us to complete the whole deployment including the approval flow—using one tool

Awesome Deployment tool for the the Cloud age!

  • January 17, 2019
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
This continuous deployment tool treats cloud and containers as first-class problems. It integrates very well with many cloud as well as container orchestration platforms such as GCP, AWS and my favorite, Kubernetes!

Pros:
- Integrates with many "providers" out of the box
- Treats containers as first-class problem
- Open source and fast-growing community
What do you dislike about the product?
Spinnaker is developing quickly and some features might deprecate as the platform grows. My biggest complaint is that it lacks in Pipeline as a Code area, although there are some beta features being developed.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Continuous deployment of Kubernetes manifests to Kubernetes platform.

Fantastic cloud-agnostic deployment tool

  • January 17, 2019
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
The ability to fully control and deploy the whole infrastructure. Very, very customizable pipelines. Full overview of your infrastructure, logs for all the changes. Easy reverts of the failed deployments, all the AWS features are fully supported.
What do you dislike about the product?
It's really hard to setup and configure from scratch, especially, if you have some tricky and specific setup.
Knowledge base is still very small and missing a lot of important things, so you need to try a lot to find your perfect setup. But, if you've configured it once, it will just work in the perfect manner for years.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We wanted to have the single-point deployment tool for the very specific and multi-account setup, which will allow us to control everything. We've got it and after the hard work to set it up, having fun every day.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
You need to spend a lot of time once to install and configure everything and to find the way to automatically change the applications and pipelines, but when you will finish with it, you will just have fun and your life will become much easier.

Spinnaker Cloud Deployment Tool

  • December 28, 2018
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Relative ease of use tool for continuous deployment to AWS.
Open source with good support
I's a pretty complete solution.
Great tool for automating deployments as well as rollbacks in the event that something goes wrong.
It allows you to orchestrate multiple steps in the deployment cycle.
Works well with Jenkins.
What do you dislike about the product?
Setup can be a nightmare.
It's not possible to build plugins to Spinnaker.
Having to recreate pipelines from scratch.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Continuous delivery to AWS.

Deploys AMI's in AWS as well as images in docker

  • December 13, 2018
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Spinnaker enables you to deploy code pipelines into the cloud on with great flexibility.
What do you dislike about the product?
Ironically, it is a nightmare to setup and configure. It is a total pet that requires the used of a purpose built installer.
The primary way for deploying software seems to be via manually created pipelines rather than code by infrastructure.
It is a little split brained in that it is made to make deployments in the cloud easy and reproducible, but spinnaker itself is not that way, and neither is the creation of the pipelines.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
It enables us to deploy AMI's on AWS EC2 instances via a CDO model.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Spend the time learning Halyard. It is a pain and, to me, feels like the wrong way to install a production system, but it is the supported and actively developed install path.

Spinnaker works well for large enterprise setup!

  • January 17, 2018
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
First thing first - its an open source. We liked Its ability to package code , configs entirely in a single RPM. It helped us to propagate the same packaged RPM ( code + configs i.e. baked AMI ) to higher environments which epitomises the whole concept of 'code promotion' in an immutable env./infra.
What do you dislike about the product?
You need skills to tweak it to your needs! :D
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
CD in cloud ( especially AWS )
Recommendations to others considering the product:
You may give it a shot! as it is open source.

Modern Pipelines for Modern Applications and Infratructure

  • October 13, 2017
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Spinnaker makes it easy to coordinate my build and deployment processes on multiple clouds with the same interface. This helps to standardize how pipelines are created that move code to different environments while making the steps very transparent. The project has great opensource support and some companies providing enterprise capabilities as well. I also like the fact that user authentication and authorization is integrated for separation of concerns for manual adjudication of deployments and access to projects.
What do you dislike about the product?
Spinnaker is still growing to support a larger user base than just Netflix and some features still need work. Pipelines as code to facilitate storing and reproducing pipelines is a much needed feature that would make standing up new pipelines much simpler. Spinnaker is composed off microservices which can make deploying and managing the platform difficult and require a lot of compute power to run. If your company is mature in its infrastructure capabilities than this tool makes sense but might not be right for smaller shops.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Separating and orchestrating build and deployment processes to achieve cohesive management of software rollouts to cloud and container environments. Spinnaker does a great job of providing a visual environment to view and manage CI and deployment steps for software in a cloud-native environment. I also like the integration with Kubernetes to deploy containerized applications.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Evaluate your ability to implement and support a platform that is fairly heavyweight composed of multiple components. Be clear that this is an "enterprise" level solution because it could be expensive to maintain for both compute and people resources. This solution requires a certain level of maturity around immutable infrastructure to truly take advantage but if you are there, this is the only solution of its kind.
