Creating Beautiful and Practical Visualizations that Speak to Your Audience

  • April 25, 2023
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I have worked with Esri ArcGIS on the public (StoryMaps) and the licensed side. Once I got the basics down, it was no more or less difficult to operate than any other graphics platform. ArcGIS StoryMaps is a straightforward interface, perfect for a GIS newbie. However, StoryMaps should not be confused with Esri ArcGIS, a powerful industry tool very robust for visualizing data through maps.
What do you dislike about the product?
When I began working with ESRI ArcGIS, I was provided a link from my institution to ESRI ArcGIS through an AWS share. It was slow, features would crash the platform, and often I could not complete a full map design that was direct from the ESRI ArcGIS sponsored textbook. However, just learning to fight my way through the challenges with the modality my institution provided gave me the foundation to operate and develop maps on the commercial platform. Based on my system and network connection, some functionality is slow, but I have no complaints overall.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I am working in farm analysis, nature conservation, and food systems sustainability issues. Esri ArcGIS is helping me to analyze various data streams to represent community resilience with strong visual constructs that are relevant to the audience.

  • April 25, 2023
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Esri is a full-featured GIS leader. They have a system that creates, manages, analyzes, and maps all types of data. GIS helps users understand patterns and geographic content
What do you dislike about the product?
One consideration is cost. But for the price, you are getting software with an excellent reputation in the geospatial arena, great reporting, and the ability to handle large amounts of data.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We are currently working to locate all of the lead pipes that are used in the city. Using data from building and inspection reports dating back to the 1960's, we are able to map that to show the areas that still have lead pipe.

What do you like best about the product?
I enjoy the ability to compile data and create maps that practically display data in a visually pleasing way. There is a great deal of functionality that some other mapping platforms don't have.
What do you dislike about the product?
I find this platform requires slightly more understanding of GIS than other more beginner-friendly options. With that comes more functionality, so it is worth it.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
It allows me to portray data visually to encourage land conservation and share the sensitivity and importance of conservation of specific areas.

What do you like best about the product?
The wide range of tools can be used in different subjects and businesses, as well as the opportunity to connect a team through a server and work on the same project.
What do you dislike about the product?
It is expensive and not as user-friendly as openGIS, where the user is freer in running and analyzing the database and incorporating it with other software and apps such as Mergin.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Esri helps use satellite images to calculate the percentage of green area in a city or digitizing methods to convert all the traditional maps to modern maps with attributes and all the necessary information for novice users of customers.

Two Decades of Geospatial Excellence: A Veteran User's In-Depth Review of Esri ArcGIS

  • April 12, 2023
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
In my 20-year journey with Esri ArcGIS, I have come to appreciate its robust and versatile capabilities in geoprocessing and GIS data management. The platform's Geo Databases feature has been particularly useful in handling complex spatial data and maintaining the integrity of the information.

ArcGIS offers a wide array of geoprocessing tools that have proven invaluable in streamlining workflows and enhancing the efficiency of my projects. Its seamless integration with various data formats and sources has allowed me to work with diverse datasets and make informed decisions.

The Geo Databases functionality not only provides an organized way to store and manage spatial data but also ensures data consistency and reliability. This has been vital in maintaining the quality and accuracy of my GIS projects over the years.

In summary, Esri ArcGIS has been an indispensable tool in my geospatial endeavors, and its top-notch geoprocessing and data management capabilities have contributed significantly to my success in the field.

Python, which has allowed me to automate my workflows and improve overall efficiency. The built-in Python scripting support, with ArcPy, makes it possible to create custom geoprocessing tools, perform batch processing, and automate repetitive tasks.

This powerful programming language integration has enabled me to develop and implement advanced geospatial analysis techniques, streamline data processing, and create custom scripts that are tailored to the specific needs of my projects. Additionally, the extensive Python community and available resources have proven invaluable in expanding my knowledge and finding solutions to complex GIS challenges.

The Python integration in Esri ArcGIS has been a game-changer for my GIS work, offering the flexibility to automate tasks and develop custom solutions that elevate the platform's geoprocessing and data management capabilities even further.
What do you dislike about the product?
While Esri ArcGIS has been an essential tool for my GIS work over the years, there are a couple of aspects that I find less favorable. My primary concern is the cost associated with using the platform. The licensing fees can be quite steep, especially for small businesses or individual users who might not have the budget to accommodate the expense. This can make it challenging for some users to access the platform's full range of features and capabilities.

Another drawback of Esri ArcGIS is the relatively long learning curve that comes with mastering the software. For new users or those transitioning from other GIS platforms, the sheer number of tools and options can be overwhelming. Additionally, the interface has evolved over time, which may pose challenges for users who are familiar with older versions of the software. While the availability of extensive documentation, tutorials, and online resources can help ease the learning process, it still requires a significant investment of time and effort to become proficient in ArcGIS.

In summary, despite the many advantages offered by Esri ArcGIS, the high cost of entry and steep learning curve can be limiting factors for some users, making it important to weigh the benefits against these drawbacks when considering this platform for GIS work.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Esri ArcGIS has played a crucial role in solving a variety of geoprocessing problems in my work, particularly those related to transportation and road maintenance. By utilizing the platform's comprehensive suite of tools, I have been able to analyze spatial data, model complex relationships, and develop effective strategies for managing infrastructure.

One notable achievement I am particularly proud of is the development of a Python script using ArcGIS to generate land parcel plans for Sri Lanka. This project was challenging due to the limited data available, but with the robust capabilities of ArcGIS and the flexibility of Python, I was able to overcome these constraints and create a solution that met the needs of the Department of Survey. This script has been in use for years, streamlining the land parcel planning process and contributing to improved land management practices in Sri Lanka.

The benefits of using Esri ArcGIS in my work are numerous. The platform has enabled me to tackle complex geospatial problems with ease, optimize transportation and road maintenance strategies, and make data-driven decisions that have a lasting impact. The successful implementation of the land parcel planning script for Sri Lanka is just one example of how ArcGIS has empowered me to address challenges in the geospatial field and make a tangible difference in the world.
