    Computer Software

Good in concept, but lacks proper features and implementation

What do you like best?
Amazon Elasticsearch Service provides a step-by-step guide and process to setting up your own Elasticsearch infrastructure, so for those who are as familiar with DevOps experience (like me), it allows end users to navigate and set up a service quickly and easily.
What do you dislike?
There's not much you CAN do if you do want the bells and whistles of a fully featured and operational Elasticsearch. It has no access to logs (BIG drawback, especially when it comes to debugging and measuring times for certain queries I am using in my application) and, furthermore, zero monitoring for cluster metrics, which is important for measuring how much usage we're getting out of it from a business standpoint. In the end, we had to go with a custom installation of Elastic Search because what this service offers is not even close to what we expect and need from a search and analytics engine.
What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?
Amazon Elasticsearch Service allows for a team like ours without limited DevOps experience/strapped DevOps people to easily service themselves with the benefits of Elastic Search for use in applications, big data analysis, and more.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
I would go with a custom installation or, if you really want to use a cloud-based service, use Amazon's Elastic Cloud instead to service your needs. Amazon Elasticsearch Service will not do enough for you to be useful.

What do you like best?
Lots of Amazon cloud service options and third-party programs, Application programming interfaces (APIs) available. Strong emphasis on securing server instances. Supports wide variety of Windows and Linux servers. Less expensive one time set up costs.
What do you dislike?
Poor return on investment, very confusing options and services which might be unnecessary for your business
What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?
Amazon Web Services (AWS) is an Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) solution that is easy to start with and you can run anything you dream of running on AWS. it is easy to use and very flexible!

What do you like best?
We currently use Elasticsearch for all search related work that involves indexing large amounts of data and filtering specific docs out when needed.
What do you dislike?
Distance searching using geo_point allows searches with point to point distance, which might not be ideal. An example could be where the two regions and separated by a river, you don't want the fly-over-river distance, but instead the realistic-take-the-bridge distance.
What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?
It's especially useful for distance related searching, where the lat and lng of the objects are indexed with geo_point, and searched by specifying reference region lat and lng and distance. It's fast and reliable.
