I Use This Product Daily and Love It!

  • January 11, 2017
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I like everything about GIMP! The cost... perfect! The ease of use... excellent! Features and functions... amazing! My alternative was to spend hundreds on Photoshop or another expensive product. In my opinion, compared to GIMP and for what I need, it would be silly for me to spend that kind of money on a product that can be replaced by an open-source, free alternative like GIMP. Installation is simple, and I have it on my PC and Macs. The number of plug-ins that can be added is awesome. Since I am not a designer, but I pretend to be at times, these add-ins make some complex edits very simple. The user world for GIMP is a cult-like following, and there are always people available to answer questions or give suggestions. I would not trade this application for anything else. I am a long-term, loyal GIMPer!
What do you dislike about the product?
It takes a bit of time to load up the application due to all of my plugins, but honestly, that is my only complaint.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I modify web graphics and marketing logos regularly, and GIMP handles everything I throw at it. My budget does not allow for me to purchase a cost-prohibitive application, but I am fine with that, as the free GIMP product fills all of my needs.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Give it a try, you will not be disappointed!

  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
It's free, it allow's me to do basic photo editing and re-sizing as that's all I need.
What do you dislike about the product?
I hate photoshop, so I kind of hate Gimp, but there is no world in which I'm willing to pay Adobe any longer, so Gimp it is as I need it.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
My needs are basic, and Gimp does literally EVERYTHING I need it to for myself and my clients.

Gimp Review

  • December 24, 2016
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
The best thing that I enjoy with gimp is that the interface is simple and easy to use. It is also free which is great for someone not wanting the full power of say photoshop that costs money as well.
What do you dislike about the product?
There's nothing I dislike about gimp because it's use is perfect for a game dev
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I use gimp to edit sprites and UI elements and export them directly into a game engine product
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Use if you want a free easy to use image editing tool.

    Insurance

Will barely suffice, if you can't afford Photoshop.

  • December 14, 2016
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
You can do some basic (and some advanced) functions through GIMP, and for free!
What do you dislike about the product?
Iit's quite difficult, if you're used to Photoshop. Requires a lot of plugins downloaded to make it work.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We needed basic photo editing, and didn't have enough photoshop licenses for the entire office. GIMP let our marketing teams still do what they need.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
There's a lot of support documentation out there (as makes sense, for free open-source software. Read it.

Ease of use and editing in GIMP

  • December 06, 2016
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Once you learn how to navigate around in GUI, GIMP allows you the perfect platform to easily work your image files. Simple to complex, all aspects of photo editing can be handled in GIMP.
What do you dislike about the product?
Open, Close, and file saving is very 1990s like.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Low cost to application ratio.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Work around with layers.

A good and free image manipulation program

  • December 01, 2016
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
The layering feature used can be utilised to create some rather complex images, using transparent layers you're limited to your imagination in what you can create with GIMP.
The export option easily allows users to create images in their desired format.
The sheer amount of features available mean you really do anything you want.
What do you dislike about the product?
The amount of features available also acts as an off-putting factor, as it can be rather hard to use.
As a new user to this program it is extremely daunting, there is just too much to do and its all hidden in menus.
The number of sub menus can easily get out control, meaning you can sometimes lose track of what you have open, and where everything is on your desktop.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We are able to complete complex image manipulation tasks, most importantly, for free.
With a little amount of training we can get a team member to quickly modify an image to our liking, allowing us to focus more time and effor on coding .
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Easy to use, hard to master. If you're thinking of using this, I would set aside a decent amount of time to get to grips with the product and read all of their documentation. If you need to do some really simple image stuff, cropping and scaling, I would stick with something a lot simpler. However, if your needs are a bit more complex, this may be what you need.

Great alternative to a more expensive picture editing suite

  • November 30, 2016
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
For my purposes, I use GIMP to make basic edits to images, crop images, add gradients, and other minor edits. For these purposes, it works brilliantly. I don't need the more expensive software to do it. Some of the less feature-filled software doesn't do everything that I need, and GIMP strikes this balance perfectly.

I have also used this software for so long that I feel very comfortable with it. I don't feel like the interface is un-intuitive, but it seems to flow well depending on your workflow, and I can find everything I need within a couple of clicks.
What do you dislike about the product?
There isn't anything that I dislike, although I can see how professionals who edit images as part of their full-time job may be hindered by some lack of functionality.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I'm mocking up basic logos for projects for clients, and it's so convenient to have a single software platform that takes care of all my editing needs.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
If you want to get into image editing, or want some of the basic functionality without selling yourself short on a less-featured tool, GIMP is perfect. While it may not be as strong as the more expensive fully-featured suites, GIMP holds its own in the middle, and does so very well.

Great Free Image Editing Program

  • November 30, 2016
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I have used GIMP and GIMP2. Currently, I use 2. I started using them several years ago, at the advice of a coworker & friend.
I like this because it's free & has a relatively user friendly graphical user interface (GUI).
It is easy enough to step through the different options & quickly undo things if you don't like the effect.
If you spend enough time tinkering around with different options, I've found I can do everything I've wanted to do thus far.
I make a lot of graphics for my hobby in addition to using this for work, so it's been fun to play with all the different options.
What do you dislike about the product?
Some of the menus are a bit buried, which is one of my only complaints. I also noticed that to save as something other than a GIMP file format, you have to go through a couple menu selections, which is just slightly annoying.
It can be a bit tedious to switch back and forth through different common options, such as Selection, Scale & Rotation. The layers feature is still a bit confusing at times.
However, I've found that for the most part, I am able to do everything I want within the same day with this product.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
GIMP2 has allowed me to create the graphics I need relatively quickly & easily. In addition, when I have an idea but don't know exactly how to implement it, I find that I can scan through the options and the naming devices for different operations are intuitive enough to find what I need.
This is a nice alternative product to the ones you have to purchase at high prices, such as Photoshop.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Find someone who has used it before for the best results.
This is a valuable, free tool that does not take an extremely long time to learn.
Play around with the different menus and options to find out what everything does.
There are still many features of this tool that I have yet to explore & utilize, just based on needs and time restraints.

I've used Gimp for years, Free image editing software doesn't get better.

  • November 30, 2016
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
The built-in capabilities of Gimp compete with those of expensive Photoshop software. Any capability I've ever needed to add is available from free extensions.
What do you dislike about the product?
Native support for drawing tablets (Wacom etc.) is weak. takes a long time properly tune a tablet even with the correct and updated drivers installed.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I use this for logo and letterhead design, image editing for website purposes, and general photo retouching.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
it takes some time to learn the features, but there are hundreds of hours of Youtube tutorials available. You don't need a class or a degree to become proficient.
