Great engine for games and VR/AR content

  • June 18, 2019
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
UE4 comes easy to use for most users like myself who are not coders. There is adequate documentation and already set-up scenarios for most use cases where I can implement my own changes and have a usable product.
What do you dislike about the product?
Unreal can be resource heavy and crash quite often when performing complex tasks. Support isnt the greatest when having an issue, you have to depend on online assistance from other users while waiting for your ticket to be seen and reproduced.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I am using Unreal to create VR games and applications, I can use their templates to create walk throughs in VR for clients without any coding or other experience.

What do you like best about the product?
Very powerful lighting/rendering/surfacing engine, Blueprints system gets you up and running quickly, customization potential, online support is extensive, lots of documentation
What do you dislike about the product?
Purchasing plans are confusing. Marketplace is not as extensive or user-friendly as Unity.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Game development, game character animation, animation integration, real-time lighting
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Learn some coding before diving in, watch tutorials and videos if you're a beginner.

Unreal Engine Honest User Review

  • May 18, 2019
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
With unreal I enjoy the interface and absolute power that the engine is capable off. Easily guide through the engine, buildings decent looking worlds with no effort. For the novice, it can get so easily complex, blueprint editing, material building, and animation workflows gives you free rain to produce unreal results. With the amount of control and graphical capabilities, unreal has become my main render software when creating new characters, environments and props.
What do you dislike about the product?
There are always pet peeves with using any 3D software, but with all honesty, if you work the engine the engine works with you. At certain points there might be a small issue; pivot not staying on a snapped object, not almost none is deal breaking in anyway. Lighting build times, Light mass resolution issues, again can all be tweaked but finicky.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Unreal has given the ability to work with VR and produce high quality real time rendering at the same time. Using the animation features in the software helps use UE4 as a one stop shot for film production in VR using mo cap.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Unreal can be overwhelming to a new comer but if you take the time and watch a couple tutorials and get to know the interface it can easily become second nature creating magnificent worlds. Take your time, don't get flustered, eventually your imagination can become your limit.

Great tool for building 3D worlds and simulating real world environments

  • January 30, 2019
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Unreal provides a stable and dependable platform to build quality games. I love the visual quality and the realistic lighting. Unreal has a very good balance of having all the necessary features to start building games while still allowing for customization. Because Unreal and plugins for Unreal are written in C++ it is incredibly easy to find or write code to do tasks that are beyond the ordinary stuff. I Love that between the market place and the built in Unreal apis and libraries I can always find what I need to build whatever is needed.
What do you dislike about the product?
I sometimes have issues with getting useful information out of the error logs in the console. In particular, when packaging a game, cook errors will often output a nondescript or generic error.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I am using Unreal to create realistic simulations of engineering problems and display/test solutions. Using Unreal I am able to re create real world scenarios and also simulate future changes in a situation.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
It is best to have experience in C++ before attempting a large scale project. BluePrints are great for small projects or for higher level tasks but ultimately C++ is important for large scale projects with a significant amount of logic.

The best 3rd party Game Engine available today

What do you like best about the product?
Epic gives you full access to source, pass on relevant tools they create for their own projects, and offer extensive notes and documentation. We have yet to run into a problem that wasn't either explained in the docs or described and solved in the vast and accessible community forums. The developer community is great and the depth of experience that can be taped through them is impressive.
What do you dislike about the product?
Unreal can be difficult to approach for smaller teams with less experience. The visual scripting system called Blueprints can be arcane and difficult to work with at times which I can see some getting intimidated by.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Unreal allows our team to rapidly iterate and get to the prototype faster than we were able to in unity. The tight integration with GPU partners allows for AAA level integration pushing our projects to great effect.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
For small teams, I would suggest you look online for similar projects and reach out if you run into any issues. The community is great and Epic has a regular live stream where they tackle questions asked on the forums.

Occasional user for Archviz VR

What do you like best about the product?
The biggest draw for me is the level of quality that you can achieve with UE4 as a realtime rendering solution. I also like how robust the toolset is and how many possibilities you have when creating a VR experience. Additionally, I think there is a great community around UE4 and they have a great library of learning resources.
What do you dislike about the product?
I dislike the current lack of integration with architecture software like Revit. While a plugin has been developed for the datasmith toolset that allows for this connectivity, its evident that Epic still has a long way to go in its development. The biggest thing I would like them to include would be some sort of live sync between Revit and UE4
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
UE4 provides the opportunity for creating fully immersive architectural VR experiences for our clients. The level of potential that this realtime solution provides is nearly unmatched.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
It's important to understand that there is a steep learning curve and time commitment involved with developing experiences in UE4. If you are willing to put in the time and effort to learn the software, the results you will get will speak for themselves.

The Best for Game Development

  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
The simplicity of UE4 and the available tools it has make it one of the best, if not the best, development environments. A lot of algorithms come pre-coded, therefore only implementation is required.
What do you dislike about the product?
There is literally nothing to be disliked about this program. It will not let you down.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We use it to modelling and refining ideas prior to implementing them in our own games.

What do you dislike about the product?
Learning code is a must to fully customize some pieces efficiently.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Releasing products for games that are in alpha phase speeds up production.

Unreal Engine is a must for Environment Artists

  • January 24, 2018
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I use Unreal Engine for displaying my Environments and what I like the best is how easy it is to use. It is very important that as an environment artist you can show your props or scenes in a game engine. On the plus side it is also free to use.
What do you dislike about the product?
In my opinion the navigation around the viewports can be a little annoying sometimes. But that is just my personal opinion and it should not affect new users.

Errors and warnings when trying to render things may also be annoying.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Benefits of using this software is creating awesome environments and realistic lighting.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
If you are considering on trying Unreal Engine, try it. There is tons of tutorials out there that will help you on getting started! Even the folks from Unreal have a pretty extensive wiki that can get you started.
