Exanet Helps Municipalities Keep Citizens Safe and Reduce Costs with a Video Surveillance Solution on AWS

Exanet S.A., an AWS Partner, helps municipalities implement an intelligent video surveillance solution that keeps citizens safe by preventing and solving crimes, reducing operational costs, and simplifying management. The Exanet solution, which integrates video cameras and AWS IoT Core sensors across cities, runs on Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) and uses Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) for video data storage.

Many South American municipalities are increasingly focusing on ensuring the safety and security of their residents through programs that connect neighbors with operations centers to inform residents about accidents or crimes. Operators in these centers communicate with other city agencies and organizations, such as the fire department, the police, and utility and public transportation companies.

However, municipalities sometimes rely on camera surveillance systems that are based on aging hardware and are prone to maintenance issues that require costly repairs. Cities also want to give their security forces real-time information so they can quickly coordinate and deploy personnel to respond to crimes and accidents as they take place.

Exanet S.A., a systems integrator and AWS Partner, sought to help cities solve these challenges by creating an intelligent urban video surveillance system with integrated analytics. Exanet helps solve comprehensive security problems by providing technology solutions for urban video surveillance, government buildings, public roads, and transportation. “We help cities support their technology modernization initiatives,” says Agustin Vilches, account executive for Exanet. “To do that, we offer a simple solution to help extend monitoring capacity in the cloud in the operations center.”

Working with AWS, Exanet built an urban video surveillance solution featuring hundreds of digital Internet Protocol cameras with built-in video management software. The solution runs on Amazon EC2 instances and uses Amazon S3 for storing all video data. The cameras, stationed throughout a city, use sensors to capture real-time video of pedestrian and vehicle traffic. The cameras also read and store vehicle license plates.

The solution provides observation and surveillance in critical areas to identify suspicious situations. The surveillance is integrated with street patrols by public safety personnel.

Using the Exanet intelligent video surveillance solution, cities can quickly identify specific locations of incidents as well as people and vehicles involved in accidents. The Exanet solution provides updated data on the number of people and vehicles at intersections to give insight into traffic volumes and motion patterns. The solution also helps city police departments identify criminals and read license plates. “Municipalities can more easily prevent and solve crimes and keep citizens safe by using the video surveillance solution on AWS,” says Vilches.
