Overview

JSR Corporation (JSR), a manufacturer of synthetic polymer materials, required a data recovery and backup solution for its on-premises and AWS environments to protect against ransomware. The company turned to AWS Partner Cohesity because of its cloud data management expertise and AWS partnership. Cohesity allowed JSR to seamlessly backup its entire data estate on AWS, thereby reducing ransomware risk and ensuring a disaster recovery plan.

Sprawling Data Stores Needs Cloud-Ready Backup

Headquartered in Tokyo, JSR Corporation is a multinational company that includes 56 subsidiaries across 47 business sites. It specializes in the production of polymer materials for multiple life sciences businesses—including diagnostics, contract research organizations, development, and manufacturing. With extensive business operations, JSR captures massive amounts of data—not only from manufacturing equipment, but also throughout its entire supply chain. The company stores its data in both on-premises and Amazon Web Services (AWS) environments.

“With our data spread across all our different companies, we really needed a backup solution that could ensure our data was immutable and it wouldn’t be changed,” said Ryan Reed, head of IT products and services for JSR Corporation. “Our initial objective was making sure our data was protected from ransomware in as many ways as possible.”

Cohesity Delivers Enterprise-Grade Backup and Recovery

With Cohesity, JSR found a backup, recovery, and security solution all rolled into one. Cohesity Data Cloud management platform allows JSR to secure and manage its entire data estate— including its on-premises datacenters—from a single platform. Cohesity provides JSR with peace of mind now that the corporation has a stronger security posture. Reed explained, “As soon as JSR captures data, Cohesity secures it and makes it immutable, effectively lowering our risk of ransomware.” With Cohesity, JSR also gained a cloud disaster recovery plan.

AWS Expertise Allows for Seamless On-Premises Backup

When JSR was searching for a backup and recovery vendor, having a robust solution was just one factor in choosing Cohesity. The other reason JSR went with Cohesity is because of its deep AWS knowledge. This helped JSR quickly create backup environments in the AWS Cloud. “The partnership between Cohesity and AWS made it really seamless for JSR to get our on-premises data up into the cloud,” said Reed.

Cohesity not only provides backup for on-premises environments, but it also protects AWS resources that are part of JSR’s infrastructure, including Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2), and Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3). “JSR finds that AWS is a great environment because it equips our developers to accelerate their processes,” explained Reed.

Keeping Data as Close as Possible Around the World

As a multinational company, JSR valued the flexibility of Cohesity and the fact it could support its separate subsidiaries in different countries. JSR also takes advantage of Cohesity operating in AWS regions spread around the world to keep its data as close to its sites as possible. “Cohesity offers us flexibility—both from a hybrid perspective as well as a cloud perspective—which allowed us to deploy it in multiple different ways,” Reed said.

Freeing Up IT Staff with Technology Partners

By working with Cohesity, JSR was able to free up its IT team so they didn’t have to handle data backup and recovery in-house. “It's critical for us to have partners,” Reed said. “There's no way our IT team can do it all by ourselves. Having partners like Cohesity and AWS who bring the tools and solutions that accelerate our work is hugely valuable for a company like ours.”

    UBlockout & TilliT

With a mission to ensure better sleep through its ultimate blackout solution, customized shade manufacturer, UBlockout, was looking for a way to standardize and scale its operations as it expanded in the United States. It wanted to unify processes across ecommerce, manufacturing, quality assurance (QA) and customer-onboarding before starting operations in its new, Dallas-based factory. UBlockout turned to AWS Partner TilliT, to unify operations and drive manufacturing efficiencies. As a result, UBlockout has scaled the manufacturing and delivery of its high-quality blackout shades to achieve a design production run-rate of 100 shades per shift at its Dallas facility and a system that can be replicated for its USA and international growth plans.

    DeLaval & Knowit

Global milking equipment company DeLaval worked with AWS Partner Knowit to build a serverless platform on Amazon Web Services (AWS) and deliver new digital services. It developed its first application to provide cow behavior analysis using Internet of Things (IoT) sensor data. The solution provides farmers with near-real-time monitoring to track animal wellbeing, when a cow is in heat, and where each one is positioned on the farm. Knowit optimized DeLaval's AWS use, cutting the cost per cow by 75 percent. Farmers now have an affordable application to manage their herd—and achieve more when faced with limited resources.
