Overview

To optimize high-volume, complex routes for municipal recycling collection in Argentina, Kovix turned to AWS Partner HERE Technologies, a leader in location data and routing solutions. HERE offered enterprise-grade routing capabilities that Kovix deployed to dynamically manage hundreds of waypoints with scalability and precision. Using HERE Tour Planning, Kovix reduced route times by 20 percent and fuel expenses by 17 percent, improving operational performance for municipalities across Argentina.

Opportunity | Addressing Inefficiencies in Route Optimization

As municipal recycling providers expanded services across Argentina, they relied on help from Kovix, a supply chain software company. For providers, their most significant challenge was optimizing increasingly complex routes with hundreds of waypoints while meeting strict deadlines. But Kovix’s prior routing algorithm lacked the scalability needed to handle high-volume operations for its customers, especially in dense urban areas with intricate road networks and disparate municipal constraints.

“Traditional routing systems often focus on smaller-scale operations and can’t handle the complexity of hundreds of stops per route,” said Max Sucari, head of marketing at Kovix. “We needed a solution that could overcome this limitation and quickly move to production without investing months developing our own algorithm from scratch.” The status quo risked delays and increased operational costs. To maintain performance—and align with its sustainability goals—Kovix required a robust, scalable approach to route optimization that could deliver immediate results.

When we see something like HERE Technologies deployed by Kovix in Argentina—and that it has been so well received and it’s growing—it gives us all space to think about solutions for other countries and cities.”

Solution | Your Scalable Routing Solution is HERE

Kovix evaluated several options, including Google Maps API and Mapbox, but found they couldn’t support the necessary volume of waypoints at a competitive price point. Those options also couldn’t be implemented ahead of Kovix’s planned kickoff date. For a fast, scalable launch, Kovix partnered with HERE Technologies (HERE) on Amazon Web Services (AWS). HERE has achieved several AWS competencies, including the AWS Supply Chain Competency. With HERE Tour Planning, Kovix gained an enterprise-grade platform capable of handling the complexity of high-volume routing, offering the scalability and precision required for customers’ growing municipal operations.

“The transition to HERE was remarkably smooth,” Sucari said. “The API simplicity enabled us to quickly integrate it with our system, which allowed us to deliver value in a very short time.” The API also freed Kovix from the need for custom feature development because it accounted for constraints in route optimization, such as urban traffic patterns, specific collection points, and various municipal schedules.

To maximize HERE Tour Planning’s advanced logistics capabilities, Kovix deployed the software on AWS. Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) provides the computational resources needed to process large-scale routing requests, which allows Kovix to handle the high volume of waypoints required for its operations. Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) facilitates secure storage and easy access to critical routing data, such as customer addresses, route history, and analytics for future optimization, while Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS) is used to manage Kovix’s databases. For high availability and performance during peak usage, Elastic Load Balancing (ELB) distributes routing requests across multiple Amazon EC2 instances so the system can handle increased demand without disruption.

With the precise routing capabilities of HERE Tour Planning on AWS, Kovix improved its ability to provide accurate arrival times, which increased trust and transparency with its municipal customers. The solution’s seamless scalability allowed Kovix customers to expand services to additional cities, ensuring they could meet increasing demands without compromising efficiency.

Outcome | Driving Efficiency and Reduced Costs, Delivered on AWS

To date, Kovix customers using HERE have recycled more than 60 tons of waste. Using HERE Tour Planning on AWS, Kovix has reduced customer route times by 20 percent, with the average travel duration dropping from 92 to 77 minutes. This efficiency has been coupled with a 17 percent decrease in fuel expenses, both reducing operational costs of municipal waste management and contributing to Kovix’s sustainability targets. Kovix can now handle a higher volume of waypoints—three times more than with its previous routing system—without delays or disruptions. With these improvements, Kovix has helped its customers expand services across Argentina. Kovix’s success proves the value of investing in robust routing solutions in the wider Latin America region.

“This kind of routing technology application isn’t ubiquitous in every country in Latin America,” said Priscila Alcantara, field marketing manager at HERE Technologies. “When we see something like HERE Technologies deployed by Kovix in Argentina—and that it has been so well received and it’s growing—it gives us all space to think about solutions for other countries and cities. When you share Kovix’s successful use case, you make it easier for other places to implement.” By meeting customer operational demands while reducing emissions and travel time, Kovix delivers the power of scalable, cloud-based routing solutions to fuel both business success and sustainable progress.
