Overview

Throwback Brands, a radio and content production company, faced challenges with outdated technology that hindered creativity, localization, and content distribution. By collaborating with AWS Partner Radio.Cloud, Throwback Brands transformed the rendering and distribution of content and reduced processing time from 30 minutes to 90 seconds. As a result, the company can now render and distribute 600 segments daily and offer cost-effective services like real-time weather updates to more than 70 affiliates. Building on its relationship with Radio.Cloud and AWS, Throwback Brands is now helping affiliate stations migrate to Radio.Cloud.

A New Industry Standard for Radio Production

Radio.Cloud is the first 100 percent cloud-native automation platform for radio content. Its advanced cloud-based technology eliminates the need for housing, powering, and maintaining multiple servers and big hardware. Scalable enough to meet the needs of any operation, Radio.Cloud helps broadcasters of all sizes migrate AM/FM, digital, or internet radio stations to the cloud. Working with Radio.Cloud was an easy and smart decision for Throwback, ultimately enhancing producers’ agility, control, and creativity. In fact, delivering updated content to local radio stations now takes seconds—whether it's severe weather alerts or artist playlist updates.

“With Radio.Cloud and AWS, we are remaking and reshaping the curve when it comes to producing quality and localized radio content,” asserts Lorino.

Big Cities and Small Towns Receive Localized Content in 90 Seconds

After a successful implementation of Radio.Cloud, Throwback now has an event-driven architecture that uses AWS Lambda, Amazon DynamoDB, and Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3). “Radio.Cloud is an ideal workflow, taking advantage of AWS and AWS Lambda to deliver content seamlessly and quickly to Throwback’s affiliates,” explains Shawn Gilbert, solutions architect at Radio.Cloud.

AWS Lambda allows Throwback to ingest thousands of different audio elements, generate playlists, and render and distribute segments to its 70+ affiliates all within 90 seconds. Previously, rendering and distributing segments took considerably longer, up to 30 minutes and with a serial process that could introduce delays. Throwback is now able to render and distribute, in parallel, up to 600 segments a day that are on average 15 minutes long. “Radio.Cloud allows us to meet our affiliates’ needs and provide services that were cost prohibitive before, like updating the local weather throughout the night,” expresses Lorino.

Affiliate Stations Join the Migration Path for Superior Audio Quality

Throwback is now sharing its successes and lending a hand of support to its affiliate stations and helping them migrate to Radio.Cloud. Of its 70+ affiliates, 50 percent have migrated with more expected to migrate week by week. Onboarding with Radio.Cloud takes about two weeks including the initial consultation, coordination with third-party providers, and the technical setup and verification of essential resources to get systems up and running. Throughout the process, Radio.Cloud provides ongoing success monitoring, ensuring a smooth transition to its content management and distribution solution.

“Unlike with our previous systems, we’ve had a lot of success right out of the gate when setting our affiliates up with Radio.Cloud,” states Lorino, “We’re really looking forward to helping stations gain and retain listeners by offering premium content.”

A Radio Standard for All the Tomorrows

Looking forward, Lorino states, “This next year is all about growth. It's all about continuing to build our level of depth and our relationship with Radio.Cloud and AWS by moving more of our affiliates to Radio.Cloud and continuing to provide the best possible service in the industry.”

    MyOnvent & SafeINIT

Digital events provider myOnvent worked with AWS Partner safeINIT to completely re-engineer its application through containerization and introduce auto-scaling capabilities using Amazon Web Services (AWS). The company faced a particular scalability challenge—it needed to correctly provision for virtual events when accurately forecasting audience numbers was problematic. myOnvent’s manual scaling solution was time-consuming, resource-intensive, and—because of the tendency to over provision as insurance against downtime and poor user experience—unnecessarily costly. Now myOnvent’s infrastructure has improved scalability and performance, enhanced reliability and availability, accelerated time-to-market, and greater cost optimization.
