When I try to use the Amazon Lightsail console, I get an error message that says "There might be a problem. It looks like you aren't authorized. Try refreshing or signing out of this account and using an account that has access to Lightsail." What does this mean, and how do I fix it?

This error message indicates a problem activating the Amazon Lightsail service on your AWS account. This is usually for one or more of the following reasons:

  • Your new AWS account isn't fully activated yet. If you recently created your AWS account, it can take up to 24 hours to activate, though most accounts are activated within a few minutes. Wait 10-15 minutes and try to access Lightsail again.
  • You didn't complete the sign-up process for your AWS account. Follow the steps at How do I create and activate a new Amazon Web Services account? and ensure that you've entered all necessary account information, verified your phone number, and added a valid payment method.
  • There's an issue with the payment method associated with your AWS account. Activating new services on your AWS account requires that the default payment method associated with the account is valid. If necessary, update the information for the default payment method, wait a few minutes, and then try to access Lightsail again.

If you tried these strategies and you still can't access Lightsail, contact AWS Support.
