My CPU credit balance suddenly dropped for my Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) T2 instance. Why did that happen?

A sudden drop in T2 CPU credit balance without a corresponding sudden increase in CPU credit utilization can be the result of the instance being stopped and then relaunched. When a T2 instance is stopped, all credits that are accrued in the CPU Credit Balance are lost. When the T2 instance is relaunched, the CPU Credit Balance will have zero credits plus any allocated Launch Credits

If you notice a sudden drop in credits, confirm that the EC2 T2 instance was relaunched around the time of the credit balance drop.

  1. From the Amazon EC2 console, choose Instances from the left navigation pane.
  2. Choose the T2 instance, choose the Description view, and then look for the Launch time date.

This process confirms that the drop in the T2 CPU credit balance corresponds to the time the EC2 T2 instance was relaunched.
