How do I enable logical redundancy for my Direct Connect virtual interface?

Last updated: 2021-02-22

I want to configure AWS Direct Connect logical redundancy over a single virtual interface. This configuration will reduce downtime when a border gateway protocol (BGP) peering session goes down due to a device failure or maintenance activity. How do I enable logical redundancy for my Direct Connect virtual interface?

Resolution

Create your Direct Connect connection and associated virtual interface

  1. Create a Direct Connect connection.
  2. Create a virtual interface.

Enable logical redundancy by adding another BGP peer for the virtual interface

Important: The logical redundancy feature is currently available only in the Equinix SV5, San Jose, CA location.

  1. Open the Direct Connect console.
  2. In the navigation pane, choose Virtual Interfaces.
  3. Select the virtual interface, and then choose View details.
  4. Choose Add peering.
  5. To add IPv4 BGP peers to a private virtual interface:
    Choose IPv4.
For Your router peer IP, enter the destination IPv4 CIDR address for receiving traffic.
For Amazon router peer IP, enter the IPv4 CIDR address for sending traffic.
    -or-
To add IPv4 BGP peers to a public virtual interface:
For Your router peer IP, enter the destination IPv4 CIDR address for receiving traffic.
For Amazon router peer IP, enter the IPv4 CIDR address for sending traffic.
  6. To add IPv6 BGP peers to either a private or public virtual interface, choose IPv6.
Note: Peer IPv6 addresses are automatically assigned from a pool of IPv6 addresses. You cannot specify custom IPv6 addresses.
  7. For BGP ASN, enter the BGP Autonomous System Number (ASN) of your on-premises peer router for the new virtual interface.
Note: For a public virtual interface, the ASN must be private or already added to a safe list for the virtual interface. The valid values are 1-2147483647. If you don't enter a value, a value is automatically assigned.
  8. To provide your own BGP key, for BGP Authentication Key, enter your BGP MD5 key.
  9. Choose Add Peering.
