I'm unable to access a service from the AWS Management Console, and I've receive an error message similar to the following:

  • You are not subscribed to this service
  • OptInRequired
  • The AWS Access Key Id needs a subscription for the service
  • Your service sign-up is almost complete!

You may encounter problems accessing a service from the AWS Management Console if your account status has not been updated or if you are using a new account for which there is not yet an associated valid credit card on file.

If you see an error similar to:

You are not subscribed to this service. Please go to http://aws.amazon.com to subscribe. Service: AmazonEC2; Status Code: 401; Error Code: OptInRequired; Request ID:

- Or -

The AWS Access Key Id needs a subscription for the service

Update your account status by logging on to the console with the AWS account root user and visit https://portal.aws.amazon.com/billing/signup?type=resubscribe#/resubscribed.

Note: These errors may occur when you follow security best practices to create and use an Administrator IAM user to perform administrative functions, and you have not logged into the console with the AWS account root user for a while.

If you see an error similar to:

Your service sign-up is almost complete!

Verify that your AWS account is associated with a valid credit card. For more information see To view credit cards associated with your AWS account.

If you're using an account that was created before 2011, then you should update your account status by logging on to the console as the AWS account root user and visiting https://portal.aws.amazon.com/billing/signup?type=resubscribe#/resubscribed.
