My Amazon EC2 Windows instance is running out of space on the C: drive. How do I increase the size of the volume to have more free space?

To increase the storage on the C: drive, create a snapshot of the volume currently assigned to “C:”. Then use that snapshot to create a new volume that can be attached in place of the existing volume. Finally, use Disk Management to extend the volume for Windows to make the additional space available.

For more detailed instructions, see Migrating Your Data to a Larger Volume.

Note: These instructions only apply if you’re using an Elastic Block Storage (EBS) volume. If your C: drive is an instance store, consider creating an EBS volume and using that as your root volume instead.
