I want to monitor my Amazon WorkSpaces for connection failures or other metrics. How can I do this?

You can use Amazon CloudWatch to monitor your Amazon WorkSpace deployments by creating CloudWatch alarms. These provide information on the health and connection status of your WorkSpaces. For information on creating and using Amazon WorkSpaces, see Getting Started with Your WorkSpace.

Some CloudWatch metrics that you can measure include:

  • Available – WorkSpaces that are running and healthy.
  • Stopped – WorkSpaces that are in a stopped state.
  • Maintenance – WorkSpaces that are in maintenance mode.
  • Unhealthy – WorkSpaces that do not respond to health checks.
  • ConnectionSuccess – The number of successful connection attempts.
  • ConnectionFailure – The number of failed connection attempts.

For a complete list of WorkSpace metrics, see Amazon WorkSpaces Metrics and Dimensions.

To create a CloudWatch alarm for connection failures, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Amazon CloudWatch console, and choose Alarms from the navigation pane.
  2. Choose Create Alarm, and choose By Organization Name from the CloudWatch Metrics summary, in the WorkSpaces Metrics category.
  3. For Metric Name, choose Connection Failure, and then choose Next.
  4. Enter a Name and Description. You might want to use the WorkspaceID associated with your WorkSpace for the description, so that you know the source of the connection failure, such as Name: ConnectionFailure and Description: WorkspaceID ws-EXAMPLE.
  5. Enter is: >= 1 for Whenever, and choose for: 3 consecutive period(s).
  6. In Actions, choose New list and enter a name in the Send notification to field.
  7. Enter your email in the Email list field, and then choose Create Alarm. This sends you an email so that you can confirm the subscription.
  8. After you have received the email, and choose Confirm subscription. You will receive an SNS notification that the subscription has been confirmed.
Note: You have 72 hours to confirm the subscription.

After completing these steps, you will receive an email notification for WorkSpaces in your directory when connection attempts have failed for 3 consecutive periods.

Note: There is no additional cost for using CloudWatch metrics with WorkSpaces, but there might be additional charges for setting up CloudWatch alarms and retrieving CloudWatch metrics by using APIs. For more information, see Amazon CloudWatch Pricing.
