What is a best practice for attaching an Elastic IP address to an AWS OpsWorks instance?

There are two steps to attach an Elastic IP address to an OpsWorks instance: registering the Elastic IP address and attaching the Elastic IP address.

First, register the Elastic IP address with your stack:

  1. Open the AWS OpsWorks console, select your Stack name, and choose Resources from the navigation pane.
  2. Choose Elastic IPs, and then choose Register Elastic IPs.
Note: To register and de-register Elastic IP addresses, IAM policies should grant the RegisterElasticIp, UpdateElasticIp, and DeregisterElasticIp permissions.
  3. Select the Elastic IP Address that you want to register, and then choose Register with Stack.

Next, attach the Elastic IP address to your instance:

  1. Choose Associate with instance.
  2. From the Instance drop-down menu, choose your instance, enter a Name for the Elastic IP, and then choose Save.
  3. From the navigation pane, choose Instances.
  4. Choose Actions, select Start, and wait for the instance to finish booting.
  5. In Hostname, select your Instance, and then choose the EC2 Instance ID.
  6. In the Elastic IPs field, verify that it is attached to the instance.
