how to provision a LAG group
in AWS Direct Connect

How do I provision a new LAG using AWS Direct Connect connections?

AWS Direct Connect link aggregation groups (LAGs) use the Link Aggregation Control Protocol (LACP) to aggregate multiple 1 Gbps or 10 Gbps layer 2 connections. This allows you to use multiple connections as a single managed, logical layer 3 connection that provides bandwidth aggregation and failover capabilities. You can configure a LAG using your existing AWS Direct Connect connections or using new connections.

  1. Open the AWS Direct Connect console, and choose LAGs in the navigation pane.
  2. Choose Create LAG, and select the connections that you want to add to the LAG, or to provision new connections, choose the location and number of connections.
  3. Type the LAG Name and, if desired, set the Minimum Links.
Minimum links allow you to set the minimum number of links needed for a LAG to be active and pass traffic. If you do not specify the minimum link value, it is set to zero by default. This means your LAG is active as long as you have one connection active.
  4. Choose Create.
  5. Review the new LAG and verify the configuration parameters, such as the port count and minimum links.
  6. If you need to modify the LAG, select the row of the LAG, and for Actions, choose Update LAG.

After the LAG has been provisioned from AWS, the state is either Down or Available depending on whether the LAG has been configured on your end. If you want to remove a connection from a LAG, select the row of the LAG you want to change, and for Actions, choose Dissociate Connection. If you have specified a Minimum Links value, you can't dissociate a connection after you reach the minimum.
