AWS Elemental MediaLive Statmux adds MPEG2 support and other features
AWS Elemental MediaLive Statistical Multiplexing (Statmux) now supports MPEG-2 encoding. Broadcasters can now use the AWS cloud to perform MPEG-2 encoding to feed legacy devices with limited codec support, without needing to perform expensive upgrades of their customer’s or partner’s decoding devices. Now that MediaLive Statmux supports MPEG-2, and previously supported the AVC and HEVC codecs, broadcasters can now use MediaLive Statmux to reach the vast majority of devices that connect them to their customers.
In addition to new codec support, Statmux video quality has improved for all codecs. Improved video quality allows customers to deliver more channels using the same multiplex. AVC and HEVC progressive video bitrates can be lowered by 5-8% and for HEVC interlaced channels, bitrates can be lowered by 25% versus previous levels. This large improvement in HEVC interlaced behavior makes MediaLive Statmux more efficient for broadcasters that distribute content in SD or 1080i HD formats.
Lastly, MediaLive Statmux now provides inter-channel priority controls. Customers can fine-tune the video quality of different channels without adjusting any channel configurations or restarting any channels.
