Intelematics Advances Data-Driven Innovation on the AWS Cloud

2021

Intelematics provides telematics and connected vehicle solutions, including safety and security systems, fleet management, and multi-model transport and traffic data intelligence.

These products and services enhance vehicle manufacturer programs to provide a better user experience and improve safety and security, while providing fleet managers with tools for efficient vehicle planning and management. Intelematics’ customers include leading automotive manufacturers, government organizations, local councils, fleet clubs, and industry bodies in Australia and New Zealand.

In 2018, Intelematics recognized the need to move away from its legacy on-premises infrastructure in order to keep up with increasing data demands – such as customer requests for traffic data and customized datasets that needed to be tailored and delivered quickly.

To that end, Intelematics migrated to the cloud over 9 months from July 2019 to February 2020 with the support of Mantalus, an Amazon Web Services (AWS) partner.

It was difficult working on large amounts of data with our former on-premises setup. Tapping into AWS’s expertise in cloud technologies, we’ve successfully transformed into a data-driven organization. Now we can process data at scale with automation and cloud-based machine learning and analytics capabilities, while infrastructure as code gives us greater business agility with more efficient DevOps.”

Driving Innovation

Since migrating, Intelematics has also successfully developed a new flagship product built entirely on AWS. INSIGHT traffic intelligence platform aggregates data from multiple sources to provide up-to-date, rich and reliable movement data within seconds to assist with project and event planning, management, and assessment.

Intelematics created a proof-of-concept for INSIGHT with AWS in April 2020 to demonstrate the product’s functionality. With the prototype completed, INSIGHT quickly went ‘live’ to customers within 6 months.

According to Colin Lew, head of data and technology at Intelematics, the enhanced data capabilities that came with the company’s new cloud-based architecture made it possible to get this product to market quicker compared to an on-premises environment.
“It was difficult working on large amounts of data with our former on-premises setup. Tapping into AWS’s expertise in cloud technologies, we’ve successfully transformed into a data-driven organization. Now we can process data at scale with automation and cloud-based machine learning and analytics capabilities. Having infrastructure as code gives us greater business agility with more efficient DevOps,” says Lew.

INSIGHT has since onboarded over 200 users, and more than 130 companies have accessed the traffic intelligence platform.

Better Data to Keep People Moving

Intelematics processes around 10 TB of live data per day using Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) for secure, resizable compute capacity in the cloud, and a variety of reserve, on-demand and spot instance types. With about 100 TB worth of datasets, the company uses Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) for stable, cost-effective data storage and easy data management, integrated with Databricks on AWS, a unified data-analytics platform to gain value-added insights. Intelematics began using Databricks on AWS in August 2020 for its advanced data processing and easier data science collaboration capabilities among cross-functional teams.

Ben Thwaites, senior data engineer at Intelematics, stated that the company has reduced development time for new features from weeks to hours.

Thwaites explains, “With all our infrastructure as code, we can now deploy changes quickly and consistently across different environments. Our IT teams are more agile, and each team can rapidly prototype multiple applications simultaneously and quickly release into AWS environments.”

Experimenting to Meet Future Customer Needs

Having benefitted from increased business agility, Intelematics is developing more advanced product features and datasets using AWS machine learning, analytics and managed services. The company plans to boost traffic data accuracy for INSIGHT and onboard new Internet-of-Things devices to unlock new product features. This continuous development supports customers with high-quality movement data to make better-informed decisions and solve complex problems.

“Our collaboration with AWS has helped us to develop a stronger culture of experimentation. Rather than getting bogged down by technical constraints, Intelematics’ forward-thinking approach is accelerated – developing new product features in anticipation of our customers’ future needs,” shares Lew.
