Overview

Sekolah.mu, a learning platform in Indonesia, recognized the need to scale its operations to meet growing demand in the country. To achieve seamless scalability, the company sought to modernize its applications with the support of Amazon Web Services (AWS).

With the help of AWS Training and Certification, Sekolah.mu’s developers implemented microservices using best practices, adopting AWS serverless technologies such as Amazon Elastic Container Service (Amazon ECS) and AWS Fargate. As a result, the organization has gained a scalable platform and cut time-to-market for new platform features by half—positioning itself at the forefront of innovation in the education sector.

Opportunity | Accelerating Innovation and Upskilling Developers to Capture Market Share

To boost productivity and maximize economic growth, Indonesia is placing a strong emphasis on education. The country has made significant strides in increasing student enrollment and promoting gender equality. As a result, the local educational technology (EdTech) industry has experienced a surge, with Sekolah.mu, Indonesia's first blended learning platform, transforming the landscape of education in the country.

Sekolah.mu—part of Semesta Integrasi Digital—an end-to-end education solution provider, has relied on AWS since day one. Its platform now serves 11 million students; however, with over 61 million students in Indonesia, the organization sees the potential for further expansion. To propel this growth, Sekolah.mu set out to lower time-to-market for new features and give its developers better tools for innovation. Rhezandra Priatama, chief technology officer at Sekolah.mu, says, “We acknowledged the importance of bolstering developers’ confidence in AWS services and validating skills to ensure adherence to best practices across the board.”

Solution | Modernizing Applications with Support from AWS Training and Certification

To upskill its team of over 80 developers, Sekolah.mu engaged with AWS Training and Certification. Priatama’s team collaborated with the AWS team to identify the courses that would deliver the greatest benefit. The training included a range of foundational and intermediate courses, covering architecting, developing, analytics, and data security, as well as comprehensive cloud skills, including databases, machine learning, and cloud operations.

To date, around 60 percent of Sekolah.mu developers have participated in 25 AWS Classroom training courses, and the boost in confidence can be felt by the entire team. In fact, the developers’ increased proficiency with AWS played a pivotal role in Sekolah.mu’s smooth implementation of microservices. The company modernized its applications, including a learning management system (LMS), by leveraging containers running on Amazon ECS and AWS Fargate to automatically scale underlying compute resources. In addition, it has implemented Amazon Aurora for serverless database services and Amazon Managed Streaming for Apache Kafka ( Amazon MSK) for data streaming.

Outcome | Leading the Online Education Space with Faster Time to Market

By embracing serverless technology, Sekolah.mu scales its platform to serve more than 25 million page views in a single school day, and drives growth in the highly competitive education market.

Additionally, parent company Semesta Integrasi Digital has applied the skills learned by developers at Sekolah.mu to launch Karier.mu, a platform that helps adult workers find jobs and develop new skills. It also built Talentics, a platform which Indonesian businesses use to attract, assess, and onboard new employees. According to Priatama, AWS Training and Certification gave the company the confidence to launch these businesses because of its skills in best-practice microservices architectures.

Furthermore, Sekolah.mu’s AWS-based learning solution now boasts increased stability, achieving a 10x increase in uptime—up to 99.99 percent. Moreover, the organization has reduced the time to implement new platform features by 50 percent. By innovating at a much faster pace, Sekolah.mu can continue to lead in Indonesia's rapidly growing online education market, which is projected to reach a value of $1.18 billion by 2023. Priatama concludes, "We have witnessed a remarkable transformation in our AWS-based learning solution, with a tenfold increase in uptime and a significant reduction in the time to implement new platform features. These metrics speak volumes about our team's expertise and the comprehensive AWS Training and Certification we have received."
