Internet of Things (IoT) Hack Day

IoT enables an entirely new class of devices that leverage the power of the cloud. Join developers, AWS engineers and IoT cloud ninjas for the first Hack Day of many from the AWS Pop-up Loft Hack Series. In this 8-hour Hack Day, we will teach you how to connect the latest IoT devices from leading hardware vendors to the AWS Cloud. We will supply all the kits, sensors, breadboards and wires and while our experts will teach you how to build an AWS-powered cloud-connected device, the connected maraca. The connected Maraca is a device that sends data to multiple AWS Cloud Services when shaken. Let's invent together and build some innovative connected products in this fun and learning environment at the AWS Pop-up Loft.

We plan to run these Hack Days every month but space is limited. Sign up now – only the first 25 hackers are allowed! Once you sign up, please be on the lookout for more details in your email and on this page.

Can't find an open spot?  Stay tuned as we'll be adding new dates each month!

If you have any questions, please email aws-loft@amazon.com.

We are partnering with various IoT hardware partners to provide you with their latest cutting-edge microcontrollers and boards (like Intel Edison) to you so you can build whatever you like - blinking LEDs that send data to Amazon DynamoDB, or cloud-connected cameras that upload videos to Amazon S3, or even self-learning drones that send real-time sensor data to Amazon Kinesis to map their surroundings and learns how to drive itself using models built by Amazon EMR or Amazon Redshift. That last one is exaggerated, but you get the point.

In the Hack Day, our IoT cloud ninjas will teach you how to build a simple connected device that uses Amazon Kinesis, AWS Lambda, Amazon Cognito, Amazon DynamoDB, Amazon SNS, Amazon S3 and much more and later help you accomplish your goal so you can build your dream machine that you can take home.

We will update details often as we get closer to dates of the AWS Pop-up Loft Hack Series

10:00am — 11:00am: AWS Kick-off presentation and Getting Started

11:00am — 12:00pm: Introduction to IoT Starter Kit (Intel Edison or MediaTek Linkit ONE)

12:00pm — 01:00pm: Lunch and Brainstorming of Ideas

01:00pm — 02:00pm: Building the AWS connected maraca

02:00pm — 03:00pm: Launching the AWS backend infrastructure

03:00pm — 06:00pm: Connecting the dots and Hacking!

I’ve already registered for the AWS Pop-up Loft, how do you register for the IoT Hack Day?

You simply need to log into your AWS Pop-up Loft account and add the Hack Day to your schedule. Register here>>

Do I need a team?

We recommend you to network and build a two-person team. However, you do not need to come with a team ready. If you don’t join a team prior to the event, don’t worry, you will be matched with other Hack Day participants with complementary skills to create a team on the day.

If the Hack Day fills up, can I still join?

We have created a waiting list for everyone who registers after we reach our 25 participant limit. If not all 25 participants show up on the morning of the Hack Day, we will assign spots to waiting list participants. We plan to have these Hack Days every month and these fill up fast so make sure you secure your spot.

Is there a competition?

No. We would like you to learn about IoT and AWS Cloud. In these Hack Series, there is no competition component. These are designed to be bootcamp-style with plenty of time to build your dream machine together with IoT cloud ninjas.

Do I need experience with certain types of apps/coding to participate?

We will be posting more details about the specific challenges that will help you determine which challenge your skillset is best suited for. All teams will be well-rounded.

Where is the Hack Day?

IoT Hack Day will be held on top floor on the AWS Pop-up Loft located at 925 Market Street. Please register for the Hack Day prior to the event. Register here>>

What should I bring?

A laptop suitable for coding (Chromebooks are not supported). No need to bring any sensors or hardware from home.

What will AWS provide?

Snacks, beverages, whiteboards, power strips, wireless internet access, MCU/IoT Starter Kits, Getting Started Guides, Sensors, and Cables. An awesome time!

Wait, can I take the kits home?

Yes. Once you complete building our minimum viable product - The connected Maraca, you can take the kit home to build something innovative. So that everyone gets the opportunity to play with the hardware kits, we will only provide the Starter Kits to those who are attending the Hack Day for the first time. If you have attended one of the previous Hack Days, you are welcome to bring your kits and join the discussion.

Where do I interact and ask questions post-event?

We have created an AWS Forum for Hackathons so you can ask questions as well as answer quesetions and help fellow hackers. Tell us what you are buidling, how you are building.
