Amazon Web Services (AWS) is dedicated to supporting justice and public safety through programs and services that meet the unique needs of the community. Whether in law enforcement, fire, emergency management, corrections, or courts, AWS addresses this community's operational and IT needs. AWS and its extensive network of technology partners provide solutions that meet the industry's mission-critical demands and empower agencies to securely and efficiently serve their public and protect their employees. AWS enables its customers and partners to adhere to the requirements of the FBI CJIS Security Policy.

Use cases

Strategic Storage

Public safety agencies are beholden to strict policies regarding data storage, management, and retention. Criminal records, crime reports, CCTV video, interview room recordings, license plate reading cameras, corrections audio, and body worn cameras are just a few examples of datasets that require storage and retention. AWS and its partners enable storage, life cycle, policy management, cataloging, and retrieval to ensure records and digital evidence are safely managed in a cost-effective manner.

Media Analytics

Analyzing large amounts of digital media can prove to be a difficult task in law enforcement. Video, audio, images, and documents can be stored with little ability to understand the information. Machine learning on AWS provides critical data analytics to derive actionable insights and intelligence from data. Natural language processing, speech-to-text transcription, and translation services enable audio and video files to be indexed, searched, and analyzed.

Data Integration

Data disparity can lead to challenges for law enforcement agencies. For environments with multiple legacy databases and tools, deriving insights from data is a difficult task. AWS allows agencies to aggregate datasets in a single data lake to improve search and retrieval, and make reporting processes more efficient. Data lakes integrate disparate dataset into a single repository, discovering insights in new data and improving the way the data is accessed and analyzed.

Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS)

The principal of least privilege is one of the most fundamental underpinnings of the CJIS Security Policy based on a "need-to-know, right-to-know" standard. AWS GovCloud (US) customers can enforce least privilege by securely encrypting their CJI and limiting all access to the CJI to only those with access to the encryption keys. By using AWS GovCloud (US), customers are provided AWS services, tools, and security assurance to enable their agencies and trusted partners to retain complete control and ownership over their own criminal justice data.

  • Security and Compliance

We know customers care deeply about privacy and data security. That’s why AWS gives customers ownership and control over their customer content by design through simple but
powerful tools that allow customers to determine where their customer content will be stored, secure their customer content in transit or at rest, and manage access to AWS services and resources. AWS GovCloud (US) is available to government customers, organizations in government-regulated industries, and other private entities that meet AWS GovCloud (US) requirements.

  • Public Safety Database

Law enforcement agencies have unique demands for processing and storing data. AWS helps agencies automate and expedite data entry and processing while meeting the needs of regulatory and compliance requirements. Our fully managed database services include relational databases for transactional applications, non-relational databases for internet-scale applications, a data warehouse for analytics, an in-memory data store for caching and real-time workloads, a graph database for building applications with highly connected data, a time series database for measuring changes over time, and a ledger database to maintain a complete and verifiable record of transactions. If you are looking to migrate your existing databases to AWS, the AWS Database Migration Service (DMS) makes it easy and cost effective to do so.

Amazon Rekognition makes it easy to add image and video analysis to your applications. You just provide an image or video to the Rekognition API, and the service can identify the objects, people, text, scenes and activities, as well as detect any inappropriate content. Amazon Rekognition also provides highly accurate facial analysis and facial recognition on images and video that you provide. You can detect, analyze, and compare faces for a wide variety of user verification, people counting, and public safety use cases.

  • Database Migration
  • Database Migration

As the cloud continues to drive down the cost of storage and compute, a new generation of applications have emerged, creating a new set of requirements for databases. These applications need databases to store terabytes and petabytes of new types of data, provide access to the data with millisecond latency, process millions of requests per second and scale to support millions of user with unique access protocols.

  • Hybrid Cloud
  • Hybrid Cloud

In cloud computing, hybrid cloud refers to the use of both on-premises resources in addition to public cloud resources. A hybrid cloud enables an organization to migrate applications and data to the cloud, extend their datacenter capacity, utilize new cloud-native capabilities, move applications closer to customers, and create a backup and disaster recovery solution with cost-effective high availability.

Case Study: Video Solution to Protect Officers

“Many police departments rely on docking stations for cameras at headquarters, which involves wired uploading of data. We wanted to create a wireless solution that transmits data from the police officer’s camera without that officer needing to do anything except focus on the job. We needed scalable, high-performance technology to enable this, and the AWS Cloud was the perfect fit.”

Jason Dombkowski, Director of Law Enforcement Relations, Utility

3 considerations for police agencies exploring cloud

The cloud is enabling officers to accomplish new tasks, including uploading, storing, and securing massive quantities of data directly from mobile devices; accessing records from multiple databases at once; deploying and tracking emergency response units; enhancing situational awareness; dictating and submitting incident reports from the field; and automating and accelerating transcription and data collection services, to name a few.

Case Study: Crime Database to Protect Children

The West Virginia State Police recognized that technology could help law enforcement overcome data sharing and administrative challenges. With a grant from the U.S. Department of Justice, the Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Data System was created a web application that provides tools and support to assist national law enforcement investigating suspected child predators.
