Quiznos cut its annual IT expenses in half by migrating to AWS

Challenge: Quiznos was hesitant to take on a migration on its own because of the perceived risk to its environment. Before an assessment by RedNight Consulting, Quiznos was under the impression it could not afford to make any changes and had to live with old equipment. The company faced deferred maintenance, however, that was causing slowness and application failures.

Solution: Quiznos teamed up with RedNight Consulting, an Amazon EC2 for Windows Server Delivery Partner, to conduct the assessment. This identified customer readiness, possible risks with the migration, and helped Quiznos identify the ongoing benefits to end users. RedNight stood up the migrated environment adjacent to Quiznos's existing production environment, allowing the customer to test and see the speed and reliability, while also giving them confidence in how the final migration would work. RedNight also consolidated, updated, and eliminated extended warranty renewals that were due soon to help save Quiznos money.

Outcome: After migrating its servers to AWS with the help of RedNight Consulting, Quiznos identified a 50 percent IT cost savings. The migration also eliminated the application failures it had been experiencing while speeding up end-user productivity.

The Toyota Research Institute modified its DevSecOps pipeline to help data scientists focus on machine learning innovations

Challenge: The Toyota Research Institute wanted to speed up the delivery of infrastructure so that its data scientists could spend more time on fine-tuning machine learning (ML) models and less time waiting in a queue for resources.

Solution: The Toyota Research Institute brought in Flux7, an NTT DATA Company, with multiple AWS Service Delivery designations, including AWS CloudFormation and AWS Service Catalog. Flux7, an NTT DATA Company, modified the existing workflows to create a more efficient DevSecOps pipeline. Specifically, they created two AWS Service Catalog products for data scientists to access. When triggered, AWS Service Catalog leverages an AWS CloudFormation template that provisions a GPU cluster and either FSx for Lustre or BeeGFS. In turn, the file system is populated with data from Amazon S3. The solution gives data scientists a repeatable process to provision ML infrastructure.

Outcome: Using an on-demand self-service portal to process data sets, the Toyota Research Institute can now test their autonomous driving machine learning models more quickly and repeatedly. This has cut provisioning time from a week to just a few clicks while also reducing errors.


Coca-Cola North America measures drink fountain consumption patterns using Amazon Redshift

Challenge: The Coca-Cola Company North America wanted to understand usage of its drink fountain flavors consumed across the globe to regularly index, analyze, and track metrics on the favors selected.

Solution: Coca-Cola North America teamed up with 2nd Watch, an Amazon Redshift Delivery Partner, to deploy a big data solution that managed the logs and reporting data from its global soda fountains. 2nd Watch built a log management system centered around Amazon Redshift and Splunk, and migrated multiple years of pre-existing data to AWS.

Outcome: Coca-Cola North America now has the ability to report and deliver global metrics to better understand the drink fountain consumption patterns. It also gained a Multi-Availability Zone (AZ) disaster recovery system for all indexers and log data, while maintaining continuous operation of the environment.

Sony Pictures delivers uninterrupted entertainment brought to you by AWS WAF and Amazon CloudFront

Challenge: Sony Pictures was paying thousands of dollars in infrastructure costs to handle large request volumes, and was not able to maintain a consistent user experience for viewers.

Solution: Cloud Kinetics, an AWS Web Application Firewall (WAF) and Amazon CloudFront Delivery Partner, noticed that load times on Sony’s servers were inconsistent with business expectations. Cloud Kinetics went through the access logs and noticed that post requests were originating from multiple IPs. The primary site is served through an AWS WAF-enabled CloudFront distribution, which sends traffic through Elastic Load Balancing and then forwards it to an auto-scaled Drupal application running on CentOS. Amazon RDS for MySQL is used as the backend database; the application uses Amazon ElastiCache for Redis to cache the database queries and thereby reduce the database load; and a custom content management tool updates the contents automatically as per the schedule.

Outcome: Cloud Kinetics implemented AWS WAF and Amazon CloudFront, which tripled the load capacity of the infrastructure while using the same hardware. It also resulted in a 50 percent improvement in user retention. Adding a web application firewall also provided DDoS protection for Sony to safeguard against incoming cyberattacks.

The Salvation Army releases a new, mobile donation platform available to donors anywhere in the world

Challenge: For more than 135 years, The Salvation Army has supported those in need all over the world through a range of social services. The organization wanted to deploy a mobile application enabling people to contribute money in a manner that resembled the simplicity of its “red kettle” cash donation approach.

Solution: The Salvation Army brought in ClearScale, an Amazon API Gateway Delivery Partner. ClearScale’s experts met with The Salvation Army shortly before the start of the holiday season. With just over a month until launch date, ClearScale worked quickly to design and deploy the donation app, which required an integration between the Braintree payment platform and AWS. To connect the new application to Braintree and enable a serverless setup, the team implemented Amazon API Gateway, a managed service that simplifies publishing, maintenance, and monitoring.

Outcome: Today, The Salvation Army has a scalable donation app that allows the organization to raise more funds and better support 23 million people in 5,000 communities nationwide. ClearScale worked with The Salvation Army every step of the way to ensure the solution dramatically improved fundraising effectiveness, allowing the organization to cost-effectively collect digital contributions from millions of donors worldwide.
