Introducing Amazon Monitron, an end-to-end system to detect abnormal equipment behavior

Posted on: Dec 1, 2020

We are excited to announce Amazon Monitron, an end-to-end system that uses machine learning (ML) to detect abnormal behavior in industrial machinery, enabling you to implement predictive maintenance and reduce unplanned downtime.

Historically, most equipment maintenance is either reactive (after a machine breaks) or preventive (performed at regular intervals to ensure a machine doesn’t break). Reactive maintenance can result in significant costs and downtime, while preventive maintenance can be costly, result in over-maintenance, or fail to prevent breakdown if not performed often enough. Predictive maintenance (the ability to foresee when equipment is likely to need maintenance) is a more promising solution. With Amazon Monitron, you can start tracking equipment health, in minutes without any development work or ML experience, to enable predictive maintenance with the same technology used to monitor equipment in Amazon Fulfillment Centers.

Amazon Monitron offers an end-to-end machine monitoring system to detect anomalies and predict when industrial equipment will require maintenance. The end-to-end system includes IoT sensors to capture vibration and temperature data, a gateway to aggregate and transfer data to AWS, and a machine learning cloud service that can detect abnormal equipment patterns and deliver results in minutes with no machine learning or cloud experience required. It also includes a companion mobile app to set up the devices and allow onsite maintenance technicians to monitor equipment behavior in real time. Amazon Monitron enables customers to remove cost and complexity from building a sophisticated, machine learning-driven predictive maintenance system from scratch, and it also allows them to focus on their core manufacturing, supply chain, and operations functions. Amazon Monitron detects when machines are not operating normally based on abnormal fluctuations in vibration or temperature, and notifies customers when to examine machinery in order to determine if preventative maintenance is needed.

Amazon Monitron can monitor and detect potential failures in a broad range of rotating equipment such as motors, gearboxes, pumps, fans, bearings, and compressors. Monitron Sensors and Gateways along with a Starter Kit are available to purchase on amazon.com or with your Amazon Business account, in US, UK, and EU. The Amazon Monitron service is available in the US East (N.Virginia) region and you can download the Monitron app from the Google Play Store starting December 7, 2020.
