Druva’s unified data protection platform is built on top of AWS, and acts like a distributed file system providing a centralized store of data that can be accessed by any number of applications that leverage a common architecture, user interface, and security model.

Druva harnesses the efficiencies, global reach, and native technologies of AWS. By bringing together the cumulative power of AWS, Druva achieves unprecedented performance and capacity on a global scale. For Druva’s global customers, the cloud model eliminates cost, complexity, and operational overhead associated with managing storage, tape libraries and other kinds of network and compute infrastructure required to run the service. “We live in a borderless networked world and many of our customers want to be able to backup, archive, and access their data from anywhere, anytime without restrictions. The cloud provides a way for us to achieve that,” says Jaspreet Singh, CEO of Druva.

Given the global footprint of its customers, Druva needed to ensure that its solutions could be available worldwide across multiple geographic locations. Other key considerations for the Druva team were enterprise-level security, compliance certifications, and the ability to meet regional data regulations and privacy requirements, along with being able to offer service level guarantees.

“AWS is clearly a market leader. The company is also well known for its technology leadership and reputation as a continuous innovator. Druva and AWS share a common DNA when it comes to customer focus and product execution - in terms of delivering features that matter most to customers with agility and commitment to high standards of quality and user experience,” shares Dave Packer, VP of Product Marketing and Enterprise Security at Druva. Additionally, a number of technical considerations made AWS an attractive option to the Druva team, including the ease of use of the AWS platform, highly scalable storage with Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3), and the availability of on-demand compute resources. “It’s important that SaaS offerings are built from the ground up for the cloud and optimized for the cloud. Once our team identified itself with this approach, it was a matter of execution before we could bring up our service on AWS. We’ve been very pleased with the pace that we’ve been able to accomplish bringing our products on AWS to market,” adds Packer.

In addition to Amazon S3, Druva leverages a variety of other AWS technologies to deliver its best-in-class solution to its customers. Druva inSync cloud collects enterprise critical data from more than five million endpoints, dispersed across the globe. “With added capabilities that allow end user data collection from cloud services like Box, Office 365, and Google Apps, this could mean ingesting a large volume of data (TBs, PBs) from endpoints and cloud applications across our customer base,” says Prem Ananthakrishnan, Senior Director of Product Management at Druva. In addition to using Amazon S3 and Amazon Glacier to store and archive data in encrypted form, Druva also uses Amazon DynamoDB. “Druva uses its patented source-side global data deduplication to minimize WAN bandwidth consumption and to optimize storage utilization and Amazon DynamoDB plays a key role in this process,” explains Ananthakrishnan. 

 

Working with AWS has allowed Druva’s internal team to focus on what is core to its business and build a scalable, secure, market-differentiating service available to customers across the globe rather than worrying about the day-to-day management of infrastructure. “If we had to manage our own data centers and platforms, we wouldn’t be able to grow as quickly as we have with the level of investment,” said Ananthakrishnan. “AWS continues to add services and regions that allow Druva to have a global presence and add more and more differentiating functionality to our product.” For example, the addition of the Frankfurt region in Germany, a region where Druva previously had to offer alternative solutions for customers due to German data residency regulations, has allowed Druva customers with operations in Germany the ability to centrally manage and protect their data on a global basis while adhering to the regulations.

In addition, Druva has a dedicated cloud offering for Federal and government customers built on top of AWS GovCloud (US). This isolated AWS Region is designed to allow U.S. government agencies and customers to move sensitive workloads into the cloud by addressing their specific regulatory and compliance requirements. The AWS GovCloud (US) framework adheres to US International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR), Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) as well as the Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program (FedRAMP) requirements.

By combining AWS GovCloud (US), with Druva’s added FIPS and FedRamp support for its flagship inSync product, its customers' organizations are now compliant throughout the stack. “We provide a cloud-based data protection and governance solution that is FIPS compliant and FedRamp ready,” says Ananthakrishnan.

Accessible only to account holders who are U.S. persons, and managed solely by U.S. Persons, Druva leverages AWS GovCloud (US) to securely host sensitive data and meet its customers’ most stringent regulatory compliance requirements. Druva’s certified cloud operations include ISAE 3000 Type 2 certification and HIPAA compliance.

Druva has scaled substantially since deploying on AWS, which has enabled over 100% per year growth of the company’s customer base over the past four years. “Druva works with well over 4,000 customers, and is trusted by large enterprise customers worldwide.
