Apptega: A GRC product that looks clean, but has some unpleasant design features
What do you like best about the product?
I love how Apptega has many frameworks to choose from and the interface is relatively easy to traverse around. The dashboards are pretty and helps executives understand what the main goal is and where they currently are. Apptega is a great starting our GRC platform for people getting into regulatory compliance. I also love how Appteg covers the main aspects of a GRC platform such as control fmailes, sub-controls, templated policies (which I will get into later), a risk platform (internal and third-party), reporting, etc.
What do you dislike about the product?
Some of the downsides about apptega are the backend functionality and how the platform works. I experience many bugs within the platform constantly (dublication of notes fields, frameworks having the incorrect sub-controls and "show more fields", rescoring of sub-controls after they've been scored, cross-walks messing up, etc.) . The downside of Apptega is the backend. Also I would like to harp on the cross-walking. Sometimes (most of the time) when I do the cross walking capability and then look into the new framework that I cross walked, all the documents within the platform get inserted to the sub-controls rather than the applicable documents to the sub-control. It seems as if someone just said "the cross walk seems compliacated, might as well just put all the documents into the sub-controls and they can then choose which ones they want to keep. For a use case example, there would be a screenshot of security awareness training under a sub-control that asks for showing a firewall or anti-virus. These have no relation to each other.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Apptega is solving the whole regulatory compliance issue with many of our clients. They get to see what the requirements are and then it benefits me by going into the sub-control and being the expert on the framework by explaining what the requirements are within the framework / sub-control.

No Compliance Worries
What do you like best about the product?
I can easily see where I'm at in the compliance journey--there are no questions about whether requirements are met or not--I have access to requirement language and recommendations. Automation features are timesavers! I have all the resources, tools, and reports I need to build and maintain the company compliance record. I can manage policies and plans in a controlled environment.
What do you dislike about the product?
The old CMMC framework module is time consuming because it requires opening each, individual sub-control to set status. The new version, which was recently demonstrated to me, is much better and will hopefully be published soon. We look forward to the data entry time savings!
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
The platform creates an integrated envioronment for building and maintaining a cyber security compliance program. It makes managing the tasks easy for administrative, and non-technical people. Reporting is geared toward management--business decision makers who need to report on compliance, budget for compliance initiatives, and support policy implementation.
Great for tracking client compliance
What do you like best about the product?
This is a great centralized platform for tracking security program management efforts for our clients.
What do you dislike about the product?
For clients with extremely simple needs, it can be a little overwhelming to navigate the platform - there are a lot of features, but not everyone needs everything.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We can manage security controls and reference them for audits. Centralized management of vendor questionnaires is a plus.
AppTega is a game changer when it comes to Assessments and Audits
What do you like best about the product?
AppTega gives you a place to store everything in one place making audits go from months to weeks. It gives you the ability to assess against a framework with tips and reccomendations as well as a place to assign risks. The 3rd Party Risk manager solves another problem with having 3rd party risks built into the platform. This is a GRC program that doen't break the bank or need a team of experts just to run.
What do you dislike about the product?
Frameworks are updated quickly but not instantly.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
GRC solutions are expensive and only enterprise level companies can afford them. AppTega provides a solution to the mid sized organizations. It replaces Excel assessments and report writing it turns assessments into operational tasks. It handles Risk assessment, 3rd party risk management and makes audits a breeze. It gives your security program visability and measurement to executives and task owners. We use it as the backbone of our vCISO business.
Fantastic Tool
What do you like best about the product?
Compliancy can be complicated and gruling. Apptega is a fantastic tool for navigating the complications, managing the project, and ensuring proper follow up. Utilizing Apptega has allowed us to move through the process more efficiently and thuroughly.
What do you dislike about the product?
We are still learning the platform but, so far, we have found nothing to complain about.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We are leveling up our internal compliance by seeking SOC 2 type 2. On the surface, it is a daunting task. With Apptega however, we have a step-by-step guide and a built in project manager. Our staff meets weekly to go over a module and assign tasks. The next week we ensure task follow up and move to the next module. Our Apptega account rep and others are available to assist if we encounter road blocks or need guidance on a topic. When we reach the audit phase, Apptega's portal will be instrumental in providing auditors access to the necessary information without back and forth communications further streamlining the process and providing effeciency.

If i could change and it is not a dislike, it would be the option of adding a framework in a short period of time.

It is very intuative and follows a logical flow.

Needs better ability to assign maturity rather than just a score for some frameworks.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
The major value is moving Consultants like myself out of the spreadsheet to a modern and easier to control and manage platform.
Good product with room for improvement.

The user interface is great, it offers ease of use and with a great layout.
What do you dislike about the product?
Lack of documentation and support. When i find myself looking for support whether it be documentation or direct customer support i find myself displeased with the offerings.

Formulating and tracking our SSP as well as our POA&M.
Savings with Self-Assessment
What do you like best about the product?
We've been pleased with the instructional videos that help us get the most out of the platform. Our team will go back to them repeatedly to review and keep up with best practice. Staying compliant with NIST is difficult for a small team, and the costs of 3rd party assessments were taking a toll on our budget. The ability to self-assess and chart our score provides tremendous value, and guides our alignment with the NIST Framework.
What do you dislike about the product?
The task of logging a significant amount of data into the platform can be daunting. Could help to gamify the process in some way?
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We were spending a large amount capital yearly with an MDR Provider to review our NIST CSF alignment. With Apptega, we're able to shift those dollars directly to other platforms and services that help improve our security posture. We're now able to self-assess and track our alignment in realtime.
