What Transformation Really Means for the Enterprise

Hosts: Klaus Bürg, Managing Director DACH & Thomas Blood, Enterprise Evangelist, AWS

Featured Speakers:
Gareth Tucker, Amazon EMEA Alliance Director, Intel
Dr. Markus Schmidberger, Head of Data Engineering, Scout24
Lajos Lange, Vice President Technology, Axel Springer, SPRING Digital News Media
Brenda Discher, Senior Vice President, Strategy & Marketing, Siemens PLM Software

Digital transformation means something new every decade. This sort of constant change is stressful for any organization, but especially for the large enterprise. Because while nearly every enterprise began as a small, scrappy team, success means growth, and growth means accumulation - more technology, more processes, more people, and more red tape. In this session, we’ll give an executive-level view of how the cloud removes the stressful burden of on-premise applications, legacy technology, and outdated processes from the enterprise. We’ll examine what digital transformation really means, and offer prescriptive guidance around decluttering the enterprise, security, culture, and more. AWS enables every enterprise to invest in strategic innovation and modernization. With the AWS cloud, enterprises become more agile, more efficient, and are better equipped to keep pace with constant change. As a partner, AWS enables every enterprise to live its own version of the Amazon Story - one of growth without burdensome accumulation, success without slowness, and constant innovation.

Transforming Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) with GPUs
Dr. Karsten Gaier, Principal Sales HPC, AWS & Dr. Bastian Schnepf, Business Development Manager, Altair

Traditionally CFD has run on large clusters of CPUs leveraging 100s of cores and fast interconnects. The recent boost of GPU performance offers a great opportunity of rethinking and redesigning CFD calculations. Altair ultraFluidX and nanoFluidX use special particle-based algorithms to exploit the full potential of AWS P3 instances with NVIDIA Tesla V100 GPUs. Compared to traditional CPU-based CFD, calculations are accelerated by an order of magnitude. Since quick turn-around times are key to influence product design early in the development process this technology paves the way for simulation-driven innovation. Even computationally challenging analyses become feasible as real world examples from the automotive industry demonstrate.

    Actuary goes Cloud
Jörg Krüger, Senior Project Manager & Matthias Lüstraeten, Unit Head Cloud Computing, Generali

Generali, one of the largest insurances in Europe, has taken the challenge to take the complete actuarial landscape into the cloud. Starting in autumn 2015 a dedicated Generali team supported by a strong internal promotor was able to bring a large part of the complete landscape in less than 3 months to the cloud. The project was so successful that for the year-end calculation 2015 the solution could already be used in production.
After going live the solution constantly has been improved and adapted by Generali. In two large and dedicated POCs together with AWS the roll-out of the solution into other country subsidiaries and the use of Windows spot instances was analyzed and successfully proven. In addition, Generali has combined business logic with on-demand shaping of the infrastructure necessary to run the requested actuarial calculations.

Industry 4.0 – From Rule based to Goal based Automation
Dr. Tilman Buchner, Director of Engineering, BCG Digital Ventures

Today production systems follow a so-called ‘rule based automation’ approach. Using this approach, you attempt to model all possible situations that a machine could be faced with into a single system of rules. The problem is that it is impossible to encompass all the possible real-world situations into a single set of rules. As a result, the machines/robots will go into failure mode and production will stop. This phenomenon is well known across all industries and has a negative impact on the overall equipment effectiveness (OEE).

The introduction of AI enables us to move automation from a rule based approach into a goal based approach. Instead of teaching the machine a set of finite rules, you instead teach it the end goals you are trying to achieve. The system has the ability to learn over time and it is able to handle situations which you did not previously define. This allows for a new degree of flexibility and unlocks previously unutilized OEE potential on the shop-floor.

This approach has the potential to change a rigid rule based production system into a smart, cyber-physical system. The business impact of this is tremendous because of the flexibility it allows, which is highly valued in a world of batch-size one production.

Delivering a Digital Innovation Platform on the Cloud
Brenda Discher, Senior Vice President, Strategy & Marketing, Siemens PLM Software

Why is a company like Siemens, known for industrial machinery, suddenly so passionate about the Cloud? The answer starts with Siemens customers and their quest to transform their innovation processes. In this era of digital disruption, forward-thinking companies are developing smart, system-driven products that effectively “disappear” and become ingrained in the everyday lives of customers. Siemens is committed to developing a digital innovation platform that helps these companies design, optimize, build, and accelerate such innovations. To do so, Siemens needs that platform to operate in the same invisible, friction-free manner as the innovations its customers deliver. That’s why the company has been on a decade-long journey to bring together all the software domains involved in the innovation process, connect them through a collaborative platform, build a digital feedback loop leveraging IoT and deliver this system on the Cloud through AWS. Please join Brenda Discher, Senior Vice President of Strategy and Marketing for Siemens PLM Software, as she discusses the company’s journey to help customers realize the potential of digitalization, and the central role that Teamcenter, MindSphere and AWS play in delivering the closed-loop, continuous innovation platform that manufacturers need to compete in this era of digital transformation.

    Stop Tendering, Start Hands-On Prototyping
Markus Bestehorn, Prototyping Engagement Manager, AWS

IT innovation projects for developing new services/products using state of the art technology like ML or IoT often seem difficult to manage: risks are unknown, steep learning curves and work estimates are inaccurate or non-existing. To avoid this, organizations often turn to tendering technology using regular procurement processes at the cost of out-sourcing key know-how. This results in buying decisions that do not address the aforementioned challenges. This session will provide insight into AWS´s prototyping offering which helps customers get started quickly on a business use case, flattens the learning curve and allows customers to make work estimates based on the capabilities/performance of their own staff when implementing this use case.

We provide insights into more than 6 years experience of the development and the operation of an IoT platform: Kärcher Fleet – a prominent AWS showcase and reference. Kärcher Fleet is an IoT platform for fleet management of cleaning equipment such as ride-on sweeping machines. Started six years ago as a "Cloud-Native Application", we have designed this solution from the start and gained some experience in the recent years when running and developing on AWS. It has been important to us that this is follows distributed architectures best practices. Some of the decisions over the years, we would do exactly the same – for others there are newer services or better alternatives. Just in the last few years, many new IoT relevant services were introduced by AWS. Our platform developed from a very specialized solution to a standard application based on the modular services of AWS. What benefits were we able to realize and what risks such as a vendor lock-in do really exist?

Start With Why
Matt Dunsmoor, Igniter, Start With Why

Any person or organization can explain what they do, some can explain how they are different or better, but very few can clearly articulate why. WHY is not about money or profit - those are results. WHY is the thing that inspires us and inspires those around us.

Examples like Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Wright Brothers prove that great leaders think, act, and communicate in the exact same way - and it’s the complete opposite of what everyone else does. The Golden Circle is a framework upon which organizations can be built, movements can be lead and people can be inspired. And it all starts with WHY.
