I tried to close my AWS account, but I got an error. Why can't I close my AWS account?

If you get an error when you try to close an AWS account, check the following:

  • Be sure you're signed in as the root user of an AWS account. Only someone signed in as the root user can close an AWS account. If you can't sign in as the root user of an account, contact the root account user to ask them to close the account on your behalf.
  • If you want to close the master account for an organization, remove any member accounts in the organization first.
  • Try using a different web browser to close the account.
  • If you're still unable to close your account, contact AWS Support for help troubleshooting the issue.
Note: For privacy and security purposes, AWS Support cannot close accounts on request.
