How can I start over with a fresh installation of my current Lightsail instance while keeping the same static IP address?

I have a running Amazon Lightsail instance but want to start over with a fresh install of the same instance. How can I do this while keeping the same static IP address?

Short description

To start over with a clean version of the server image on the existing instance, clean up the installations and data on the server manually.

Or, you can launch a new Lightsail instance from the same Lightsail blueprint of your instance. Then you can attach the same static IP addressed used on the existing instance to the new instance.

To launch a new Lightsail instance and attach the static IP from the previous instance to it, do the following

  1. Open the Amazon Lightsail console.
  2. Select Create instance.
  3. Select the same platform as the existing instance (for example, Linux/Unix). Then, select the same blueprint as the existing instance (for example, Django).
  4. (Optional) Change the SSH key pair, if required.
  5. Select the Lightsail instance plan of your choice.
  6. Name your new Lightsail instance and then select Create Instance.
  7. After the new Lightsail instance launches, return to the Lightsail home page and select the original instance.
  8. On the Networking tab of the original instance, locate the static IP address.
  9. Select the menu icon (⋮) and then select Manage, Detach.
  10. On the confirmation screen, select Yes, detach.
  11. After the static IP detaches, in the Attach to an instance option, select the new Lightsail instance name, and then select Attach.

Note: You can attach static IP addresses to instances only in the same Region as the original instance.
