Fine Tune Your Oracle Database With Oracle Statspack

Amazon RDS for Oracle Database now supports Oracle Statspack.

You can use Oracle Statspack to collect and analyze database performance metrics and use them to diagnose problems and to increase performance. The Oracle Statspack is available for all Oracle editions and engine versions supported by Amazon RDS for Oracle. You can install it on your database instances and use it without additional charges.

Oracle Statspack takes the form of a set of SQL, PL/SQL, and SQL*Plus scripts that collect, store, and display performance data. You can generate reports that give you insights into instance health, SQL statements that consume more than their share of resources, wait events, and initialization parameters.

You can enable Oracle Statspack in the Database Option Group associated with the target instance. See the Oracle DB Engine Options documentation for more information.

Here’s a short excerpt from a lengthy Statspack report:

Just in case you missed my earlier posts, Amazon RDS for Oracle already supports Transparent Data Encryption, Resource-Level Permissions, and the ability to specify up to 30,000 IOPS and 3 TB of storage.
