Amazon EC2 now allows customers to switch the tenancy of existing VPCs from dedicated to default instantly, by using the AWS CLI/SDK. Dedicated tenancy ensures all EC2 instances that are launched in a VPC run on hardware that's dedicated to a single customer.
As of May 2017, customers who want to run Protected Health Information (PHI) workloads no longer need to run their workloads on Dedicated Instances or Dedicated Hosts (see announcement here). With the new CLI/SDK, customers do not need to migrate their workloads from existing VPCs to new default tenancy VPCs to benefit from this change. Instead, they can use the AWS CLI/SDK to ensure that all new instances in the VPC are launched with default tenancy.
This functionality is available in all AWS regions. For more information visit http://docs.aws.amazon.com/AWSEC2/latest/UserGuide/dedicated-instance.html#change-tenancy-vpc
