AWS OpsWorks for Chef Automate Now Supports In-Place Upgrade to Chef Automate 2

Posted on: Jan 27, 2020

You can now perform an in-place upgrade of your Chef Automate server to Chef Automate 2 from the AWS OpsWorks for Chef Automate console or the AWS CLI.

Chef Automate 2 is an upgrade that makes it much easier to explore the state of your infrastructure and has an even greater emphasis on compliance features than its predecessor. Since May 2019, all newly created OpsWorks for Chef Automate servers have already been created with Chef Automate 2. It is now possible for OpsWorks customers, who on-boarded prior to May 2019, to perform an in-place upgrade of their OpsWorks server from Chef Automate to Chef Automate 2.

To initiate the in-place upgrade you can use the AWS OpsWorks for Chef Automate management console. Eligible servers will show a “Start Upgrade” button at the top of the server detail page. Additionally, you can use the AWS CLI by issuing the ‘start-maintenance’ command and setting the engine attribute CHEF_MAJOR_UPGRADE to true. For examples and details about upgrade eligibility and more please see our documentation.
