Today, AWS announces the general availability of AWS HealthScribe, a HIPAA eligible, generative AI-powered service designed to help healthcare application builders automatically create preliminary clinical documentation from patient-clinician conversations. With AWS HealthScribe, you can integrate speech recognition and generative AI, specifically trained to assist with healthcare industry documentation, into your application to help accelerate clinical documentation and enhance the consultation experience. AWS HealthScribe makes it easier and faster for healthcare software providers to include generative AI capabilities without the need to manage the underlying machine learning (ML) infrastructure or train their own healthcare-specific large language models (LLMs).
Using a single API, AWS HealthScribe allows you to automatically generate preliminary clinical notes from consultation audio for key sections of a patient conversation. Available sections include reason for visit, history of present illness, review of systems, past medical history, assessment, and treatment plan. AWS HealthScribe supports the safe use of AI in clinical settings; every sentence in AI-generated notes has a reference to the original transcript to help validate the accuracy of the generated summary. The service also identifies speaker roles as a clinician or patient and classifies dialogue into categories, such as small talk, subjective, or objective. Categorization helps users quickly locate the most relevant portions of the consultation transcript. Additionally, AWS HealthScribe extracts structured medical terms, such as medical conditions, medications, and treatments. These medical terms can be used to generate useful workflow suggestions and auto-suggest relevant data entries in clinical applications. Security and privacy are built-in, as AWS HealthScribe does not retain inbound audio or output text. You also have control over where your data is stored, with data encrypted in transit and at rest.
AWS HealthScribe is generally available in US East (N. Virginia). Get started today by visiting the AWS Management Console.
