AWS and the NFL's Next Gen Stats team have developed Pressure Probability, a groundbreaking machine learning-powered metric that revolutionizes pass rushing statistics in the NFL. This innovative stat goes beyond traditional manual charting processes, measuring pressure for every pass rusher every second of every pass play. Leveraging submissions from the Big Data Bowl, the team created four new AI models based on over 90,000 passing plays from the last five years. These models use sensor data to identify defensive rushers, offensive blockers, and their matchups, providing insights into the speed, magnitude, and evolution of pressure during a play. Pressure Probability also considers factors like the rusher's path to the quarterback and the quarterback's reaction, offering a more comprehensive analysis of pass rushing effectiveness.
