Do I need to self-assess for VAT when I purchase from AWS Europe?

If your account is in one of the following countries, you no longer need to self-assess for VAT after July 1, 2018:

  • Belgium
  • Denmark
  • Finland
  • France
  • Germany
  • Ireland
  • Israel
  • Italy
  • Luxembourg
  • Netherlands
  • Poland
  • Portugal
  • Spain
  • Sweden
  • The United Kingdom

Instead, AWS includes the charges for VAT with your monthly bill and remits it to the proper authorities on your behalf.

If you registered your tax registration number (TRN) on your AWS account, AWS uses the country associated with your TRN to assess your tax liability.

If you don't have a TRN, or if your country isn't available in Tax Settings, AWS uses the country associated with your billing address, account address, and default payment method to assess your tax liability. You might still receive a VAT invoice to enable you to self-assess VAT. If you're uncertain whether you need to self-assess VAT, please consult your tax advisor.
