Step 4: Enable cost controls for your account

AWS offers you a pay-as-you-go approach for pricing for the vast majority of our cloud services. With AWS, you pay only for the individual services you need, for as long as you use them, and without requiring long-term contracts or complex licensing. AWS pricing is similar to how you pay for utilities like water and electricity. You only pay for the services you consume, and once you stop using them, there are no additional costs or termination fees.

Because you pay for AWS services as you use them, it’s important to set up cost controls in your AWS account. You can use AWS Budgets to track and take action on your AWS costs and usage.

For further assistance, see these step-by-step instructions for controlling AWS costs with AWS Budgets and using AWS Billing and Cost Management services. Contact AWS Public Sector for additional help.

Public Sector Success Stories

Learn how public sector organizations across the country use AWS to manage IT costs, enhance data security, and grow with the power of cloud computing.

How Rockdale County improved operations and security with the cloud

With cyberattacks on the rise, so too are stories about government agencies and departments that have been victims. Rockdale County, Georgia, is one of them. The jurisdiction experienced two cybersecurity incidents that led Jamie Cabe, the county’s chief of staff, to work with AWS Partner Tyler Technologies, Inc. to use the cloud to make adjustments to strengthen the county’s security position. Migrating to the cloud not only enhanced data security and continuity of operations, but it also reduced network downtime by 99 percent, while streamlining budgeting and reducing the IT staff’s burden.

How Livingston Parish prepares for natural disasters by improving resiliency in the cloud

Natural disasters are devastating, often resulting in loss of life and massive property damage. They can also damage the critical infrastructure that powers emergency services, prompting public sector organizations to consider building more resilient infrastructure. Such was the case for the 911 system in Livingston Parish, Louisiana, an agency that dispatches for 21 public safety agencies, including law enforcement, fire, and emergency medical services, and averages over 325 calls for service per day. After a major flood in 2016 knocked out their 911 system, they decided to use the Amazon Web Services (AWS) Cloud to become resilient against disaster, reducing service interruptions and improving response times.

How Hartnell College Leveraged Cyberattack Recovery to Modernize IT Infrastructure with AWS

After a cyberattack disabled Hartnell College’s entire IT infrastructure, AWS Partner, Ferrilli, helped the institution get back online in a few days with a new cloud-based infrastructure built on AWS. The scalable, flexible, and stable infrastructure can grow with Hartnell College’s needs for the future.

Fife School Districts Use Amazon AppStream 2.0 to Provide Equitable Access

Fife Public Schools provides a device for every kid in the district. But like many schools with 1:1 programs, they ran into challenges when trying to provide specialty software programs to students that were only accessible via computer labs during school hours. To fill the void, Fife School District implemented Amazon AppStream 2.0, allowing students to access specialty software on their devices via a browser.
