Amazon FSx for Windows File Server, a service that provides fully managed native Microsoft Windows file systems, has made Windows shadow copies available to all file systems. Since launch of this feature on July 31, 2019, it was available only on newly-created Amazon FSx file systems. Now, customers can use shadow copies on any existing file system to enable end-users to easily view and restore previous versions of files.
A Windows shadow copy is a snapshot of a Windows file system at a point in time. With shadow copies enabled, end-users can view and restore individual files or folders from a prior snapshot with the click of a button in Windows File Explorer, allowing them to easily undo changes and compare file versions. Storage administrators using Amazon FSx can easily schedule shadow copies to be taken periodically using Windows PowerShell commands.
Support for shadow copies is now available for all file systems in all regions where Amazon FSx is available. You will not incur separate charges for using shadow copies, as the shadow copies are stored within your file system.
