Amazon Relational Database Service (Amazon RDS) for Oracle now supports converting existing Oracle Database 19c instances from the non-multitenant to the multitenant database architecture. DB instances using the multitenant architecture consist of a container database (CDB) with a single pluggable database (PDB). A PDB is a set of schemas, schema objects, and non-schema objects that logically appears to a client as a non-CDB.
Starting today, Amazon RDS for Oracle customers can convert existing 19c non-CDB instances to CDBs. Starting with Oracle Database 21c, the non-CDB architecture is desupported by Oracle, and you must upgrade your non-CDB Oracle Database to a multitenant database (PDB on a CDB). Please note this conversion is a pre-requisite, if you are planning to upgrade from Oracle Database 19c to 21c. Amazon RDS for Oracle supports the multitenant container database for versions 19c (starting from the Release Update 19.0.0.0.ru-2021-04.rur-2021-04.r1) and 21c for customers who use any edition of Oracle Database with the License Included or Bring Your Own License models.
