AWS Compute Optimizer now recommends licensing optimization opportunities for Microsoft SQL Server workloads on Amazon EC2. With this launch, AWS Compute Optimizer can provide automated recommendations for downgrading SQL Server Edition for your EC2 SQL Server license included and bring-your-own-license (BYOL) instances to reduce licensing cost.

Amazon EC2 is the proven, reliable, and secure option to run your SQL Server workloads in the cloud. AWS Compute Optimizer automatically discovers your SQL Server instances on Amazon EC2 by inferred workload type. To receive the licensing recommendations, you can select the SQL Server instances in AWS Compute Optimizer and authenticate CloudWatch Application Insights with your read-only database credentials. AWS Compute Optimizer will then analyze if you are using any SQL Server Enterprise edition features. When no Enterprise features are being used, AWS Compute Optimizer will recommend you downgrading to Standard Edition to save SQL Server licensing cost.

This new feature is available in all AWS Regions where AWS Compute Optimizer is available. To learn more about the new feature updates, please visit Compute Optimizer’s product page and user guide
