Commercial Linux Distributions on AWS

Run your choice of Linux seamlessly with certified, optimized and supported distributions from AWS

Amazon Web Services (AWS) offers a broad range of commercial Linux distributions including Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), Ubuntu Pro, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) and associated community-supported Linux distributions including CentOS, Ubuntu and OpenSUSE. Our commercial Linux partners simplify licensing, support, and billing while delivering optimized security, performance, and customizations that work with core AWS features. These partner solutions on AWS give you the ability to run enterprise on-premise applications, such as SAP, Microsoft SQL server, Oracle databases, and custom applications in the cloud.

Whether migrating, replatforming or building new Linux applications in AWS, you can choose from hundreds of ready-to-deploy images ranging from minimal and hardened installations to specialized distributions for security, SAP, SQL, and GPU dependent workloads.

Benefits

Experience

AWS has been delivering commercial enterprise Linux distributions for over a decade.

Optimization

Choose from the major distributions optimized to meet your needs for key workloads (e.g. SAP, SQL), performance (GPU), compliance (Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) 140-2) and more.

Simplicity

Choose from hundreds of distributions and supported applications in the AWS Marketplace and the Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) console.

Integrations

Simplify configurations with deep integrations including Amazon EC2 console, Amazon Elastic Block Store (Amazon EBS), Amazon CloudWatch, Elastic-Load Balancing, Elastic IPs, and Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service (Amazon EKS).

Procurement Compliance

Purchasing from AWS is more convenient than procuring licenses and support from multiple vendors. Purchasing from AWS also mitigates compliance risk because licensing can adjust with consumption.

Support

AWS offers joint support with most major Linux providers and delivers many Linux distributions that automate provisioning, patching, and configuration for faster, consistent, and repeatable server deployment.

Pricing

Commercial Linux OS products are available to you through the AWS Console or AWS Marketplace. For most partner Linux OS, the price is included in the EC2 infrastructure instance price except for Ubuntu Pro OS and SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) for SAP Applications products. Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Red Hat provide a complete, enterprise-class computing environment.  Customers benefit from the familiar interface and consistent environment of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) and the simplicity and scalability of AWS. Amazon EC2 instances running RHEL provides a dependable platform to deploy a broad range of applications. By running RHEL on Amazon EC2, you get the cost effectiveness, scalability, and flexibility of Amazon EC2, the reliability of Red Hat Enterprise Linux, and AWS support with back-line support from Red Hat. Amazon EC2 running Red Hat Enterprise Linux provides seamless integration with existing Amazon EC2 features, including Amazon Elastic Block Store (Amazon EBS), Amazon CloudWatch, Elastic Load Balancing, and Elastic IP addresses.

Canonical

AWS and Canonical provide migration, application redesign, support, and optimization services to help customers make the most of AWS and Ubuntu. Ubuntu on AWS runs on an AWS-optimized kernel, which includes improved device drivers, like Elastic Network Adaptar (ENA), and out of the box support for accelerators like GPUs. This means faster instance starts, better runtime performance, and advanced device support to match features present in every AWS EC2 instance type. Canonical publishes images daily, ensuring security is built-in from the moment an instance launches and provides content mirrors in every region to avoid the need to go across regions or out to the Internet for updates.
