SIOS DataKeeper Cluster Edition on AWS

Accelerate the deployment of highly available clusters

This Partner Solution deploys SIOS DataKeeper Cluster Edition to the Amazon Web Services (AWS) Cloud. Fully integrated with Windows Server Failover Cluster (WSFC), it enables storage-agnostic clusters in WSFC environments where shared storage is impossible or impractical. SIOS DataKeeper extends WSFC with automatic failover of application instances across Availability Zones or AWS Regions for disaster protection.

This Partner Solution was developed by SIOS Technology Corp. in collaboration with AWS. SIOS is an AWS Partner.

  •  What you'll build
  • This Partner Solution sets up the following:

    • A highly available architecture that spans two (optionally three) Availability Zones.*
    • A virtual private cloud (VPC) configured with public and private subnets, according to AWS best practices, to provide you with your own virtual network on AWS.*
    • In the public subnets:
      • Managed network address translation (NAT) gateways to allow outbound internet access for resources in the private subnets.*
      • Remote Desktop Gateway (RD Gateway) instances in an Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) Auto Scaling group for remote administration.*
    • In the private subnets, a WSFC cluster containing two (optionally three) Microsoft SQL Server nodes with SIOS DataKeeper replication software. Each node resides in a separate Availability Zone and contains an Amazon Elastic Block Store (Amazon EBS) volume for replicated data storage. For information on supported operating system versions, refer to the DataKeeper Cluster Edition (DKCE) support matrix.
    • An Amazon FSx for Windows File Server file system provides quorum witness functionality to the WSFC cluster.*
    • AWS Directory Service for Microsoft Active Directory (Standard Edition or Enterprise Edition) to provision Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) and to manage tasks such as monitoring domain controllers and configuring backups and snapshots. You can add AD DS domain controllers as EC2 instances to the architecture and manage these yourself.
    • AWS Secrets Manager to store credentials.
    • An AWS Systems Manager automation document to automate the deployment.

    * The template that deploys the Partner Solution into an existing VPC skips the components marked by asterisks and prompts you for your existing VPC configuration.

  •  How to deploy
  • To deploy this Partner Solution, follow the steps in the deployment guide, which includes these steps. The stack takes about 45 minutes to launch.

    1. Sign in to your AWS account. If you don’t have an AWS account, sign up at https://aws.amazon.com.
    2. Subscribe to the SIOS DataKeeper AMI in the AWS Marketplace. The following licensing options are available:
    3. Launch the Partner Solution. Before you create the stack, choose the AWS Region from the top toolbar. You can choose from two options:
    4. Test the deployment.
    5. (Optional) Configure additional nodes.

Amazon may share user-deployment information with the AWS Partner that collaborated with AWS on this solution.

  •  Costs and licenses
  • This Partner Solution uses Amazon Machine Images (AMIs) from AWS Marketplace. In addition, this deployment of SIOS Protection Suite for Linux uses a Bring Your Own License (BYOL) model. You can purchase a runtime license or request a 14-day free trial license. You also have the option of using a Pay As You Go (PAYG) license model, which installs a basic license. If you want to upgrade to full functionality later, contact SIOS sales.

You are responsible for the cost of the AWS services and any third-party licenses used while running this solution. There is no additional cost for using the solution.

This solution includes configuration parameters that you can customize. Some of these settings, such as instance type, affect the cost of deployment. For cost estimates, refer to the pricing pages for each AWS service you use. Prices are subject to change.

Tip: After you deploy a solution, create AWS Cost and Usage Reports to track associated costs. These reports deliver billing metrics to an Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) bucket in your account. They provide cost estimates based on usage throughout each month and aggregate the data at the end of the month. For more information, refer to What are AWS Cost and Usage Reports?
