New York City Metropolitan Transportation Authority
New York, USA
Champion since 2023
The New York City Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) is a public benefit corporation responsible for public transportation in the New York City metropolitan area of New York. The MTA is the largest public transit authority in the United States, serving 12 counties in downstate New York, along with two counties in southwestern Connecticut under contract to the Connecticut Department of Transportation. MTA carries over 11 million passengers on an average weekday systemwide, and over 850,000 vehicles on its seven toll bridges and two tunnels per weekday.
The Department of Buses at MTA is partnering with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to track bus operators’ driving trends with the goal of curtailing unsafe behavior and instill better driving habits. MTA wants to identify and record instances of potentially risky driving by analyzing data generated by equipment/sensors already on the bus. They partnered with AWS to build a solution using native AWS services to demonstrate risky driver behavior and profiles at a granular level. The next phase of this project will involve rolling this proof-of-concept to 6,000 MTA buses in a production environment.
