Amazon Pinpoint achieves HIPAA eligibility for the SMS channel

Posted on: Feb 20, 2020

The SMS channel in Amazon Pinpoint is now U.S. Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) eligible. You can now use Amazon Pinpoint to send SMS messages that contain protected health information (PHI).

HIPAA eligibility for the SMS channel applies to all AWS Regions where Amazon Pinpoint is available. If you have a HIPAA Business Associate Addendum (BAA) in place with AWS, you can now start using Amazon Pinpoint for your HIPAA eligible workloads (excluding voice messaging workloads).

If you don't have a BAA in place with AWS, or if you have any other questions about running HIPAA-regulated workloads on AWS, please contact us. For information and best practices about configuring AWS HIPAA Eligible Services to store, process, and transmit PHI, see the Architecting for HIPAA Security and Compliance on Amazon Web Services Whitepaper.

With Amazon Pinpoint, you can engage your customers by sending them marketing campaigns and transactional messages through the email, SMS, push, and voice channels. The analytics capabilities of Amazon Pinpoint help you analyze the performance of your engagements and develop a deeper understanding of your users.
