Starting today, you can use the Amazon WorkSpaces macOS client application with Common Access Card (CAC) and Personal Identity Verification (PIV) smart cards. Smart card support is available on WorkSpaces using the WorkSpaces Streaming Protocol (WSP). WSP is a cloud-native streaming protocol that enables a consistent user experience when your end users are accessing their WorkSpaces across global distances and unreliable networks. To learn more, see Amazon WorkSpaces Streaming Protocol.
With this launch, CAC/PIV smart card support with the macOS client enables access to protected applications from within a WorkSpaces instance (in-session authentication) or authentication into a WorkSpaces instance (pre-session authentication). To get started, see Use Smart Cards for Authentication in the Amazon WorkSpaces Administration Guide.
In-session CAC/PIV smart card authentication is available in commercial AWS Regions in which WorkSpaces is available today as well as in AWS GovCloud (US-West). Pre-session smart card authentication support is available in the AWS GovCloud (US-West) Region.
