Amazon OpenSearch Service now offers improved visibility into the progress of blue/green deployments to your Amazon OpenSearch Service domains. This includes visibility into the completion of different steps within an update, such as creation and deletion of instances, and the progress of shard migration.
Amazon OpenSearch Service uses a blue/green deployment process when updating domains. Blue/green typically refers to the practice of running two production environments, one live and one idle, and switching the two as you make software changes. In the case of Amazon OpenSearch Service, it refers to the practice of creating a new environment for domain updates and routing users to the new environment after those updates are complete. The practice minimizes downtime and maintains the original environment in the event that deployment to the new environment is unsuccessful. Blue/green deployments are required in Amazon OpenSearch Service for activities such as service software updates and for certain types of configuration changes such as changing the instance type used in a domain. For a complete list of changes that require a blue/green deployment, please refer to the documentation here. Previously, you could see that the domain was in a processing state after initiating a software update or after making a configuration change, but could not get visibility into the progress of the underlying steps, such as the number of shards that have been copied at any given point in time during the deployment. With this change, you can get visibility into various stages of a blue/green deployment, such as creating a new environment, provisioning instances, copying shards, and deletion of older instances.
