Starting today, Amazon EC2 supports the replacement of instance root volume using an updated AMI without requiring customers to stop their instance. This allows customers to easily update their applications and guest operating system, while retaining the instance store data, networking and IAM configuration.
Customers can use the feature to patch their software quickly without having to incur the operational costs of instance store data backups or replication. Customers with stateful workloads can use the feature to ensure that their software is up-to-date and improve their security posture by patching more frequently.
The feature is available in all public AWS Regions and AWS GovCloud (US) Regions. To learn more about the Replace Root Volume for patching feature, visit the Replace Root Volume page.
