Scuderia Ferrari Uses AI and ML on AWS to Innovate—and Sharpen Its Competitive Edge

Scuderia Ferrari comprises the racing division and teams of luxury Italian auto manufacturer, Ferrari S.p.Ais (Ferrari), based in Maranello, Italy. Throughout its history, the company has been noted for its continued participation in racing, especially in Formula 1, where it is the oldest and most successful racing team.

Scuderia Ferrari driver coach Jock Clear discusses the decisions of Formula 1 racing—one of the most competitive, technically challenging sports. Racing involves constant decision making and tradeoffs in performance engineering that is a blend between hardware (the car), software (the data), and the human skill (the driver).

In partnership with Amazon Web Services (AWS), Scuderia Ferrari developed a virtual ground speed sensor, off car, based on artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) using Amazon SageMaker (SageMaker).

This delivers faster, more reliable data to its engineers and helps its race teams reduce vehicle weight—in a sport where every gram counts. To evaluate the many variables involved in race strategy, Scuderia Ferrari creates models on AWS based on ML and game theory. Clear also announced Scuderia Ferrari's new app, coming in 2023, powered by AWS solutions and analytics.
