Generation Interconnection Simulation

Enabling faster simulations at scale to streamline generation interconnection studies.

Contact us

Integration of power generation projects into the transmission grid has been increasingly challenging due to the accelerating growth in renewables, bottleneck in the electric grid, and evolving customer energy needs. To comprehensively evaluate the costs and risks, independent power producers, electric utilities, and system operators all conduct extensive simulations in the generation interconnection planning process for power projects. These simulations often run on local servers, or, if in the cloud, not on optimized infrastructure. With the increasing complexities, customers are struggling with the scalability, cost, and performance of these runs. In the event of disruptions, sometimes customers will have to start over again.

Generation Interconnection Simulation solution on AWS help power and utilities companies scale their business-critical simulations in transmission planning, reducing complex simulation cycle times by up to 90% or more. It also improves assessment thoroughness and robustness by enabling customers to execute longer study horizon, resumes stopped runs and simulates multiple (up to 10x more) scenarios. Using these solutions, companies can reduce project costs and risks, accelerating the energy transition.

Customer reference: Reducing delays in generation interconnection studies

Challenge:

  • Power and Utilities companies have been running generation interconnection simulations on a sub optimal infrastructure.
  • One US-based IPP was frustrated with the performance of their tools. The increasing complexities of running multiple scenarios meant long processing times, up to 40+ days per simulation.

Solution:

  • Run parallel processing generation interconnection simulation workload using AWS High-Performance Computing services.

Impact:

  • Delivered Time Savings of more than 90% (from weeks to days!) with new cloud architecture and High Performance Computing, streamlining the generation interconnection process.
  • Faster and enabled multiple scenarios in parallel, accelerating speed of innovation by 10x, while reducing the total cost of the project.
