AWS Outposts are fully managed and configurable compute and storage racks built with AWS-designed hardware, that allow customers to run compute and storage on-premises, while seamlessly using the same native AWS APIs used in the AWS cloud.
Native access to additional AWS services
AWS Outposts will be an extension of your Amazon VPC in the nearest AWS Region, and you can seamlessly connect from your AWS Outposts to the rest of your applications in AWS or any other AWS service.
One programming interface
You can use the same programming interface, same APIs, same console and CLI you use on the AWS cloud for your on-premises applications. You can now develop and maintain a single code base, and use the same deployment tools on the AWS cloud and on-premises.
Proven AWS infrastructure
AWS Outposts are built using the same infrastructure used in AWS data centers. You get the same hardware security and performance you enjoy on AWS for your on-premises applications and eliminate the need to recertify your applications on different hardware.
Choose from a wide selection of compute, memory, and storage options to create the ideal configuration for your applications.
Fully managed infrastructure upgrades
AWS automatically operates, updates, and maintains the infrastructure management software, eliminating the overhead of regularly downloading new software, upgrading to new functionality, or applying security patches. For hardware upgrades, you can choose to have AWS perform the upgrades or have your own staff follow simple upgrade instructions.
The AWS Management Console can be used to monitor the health and performance of Outposts infrastructure.
VMware NSX integration
If you use Layer 2 networking on-premises, you can use VMware NSX to connect Outposts resources to diverse on-premises networks topologies and legacy applications. VMware NSX extends routing protocols, policies, and subnets, provides Layer 2 connectivity, and strengthens security through micro-segmentation.
AWS native variant
The AWS native variant of AWS Outposts allows you to use the same exact APIs and control plane you use in the AWS cloud, but on-premises. You will be able to run Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) and Amazon Elastic Block Store (Amazon EBS) on Outposts. At launch or in the months after, we plan to add services like RDS, ECS, EKS, SageMaker, EMR.
The VMware variant allows you to run VMware Cloud on AWS locally on Outposts to use the same VMware control plane and APIs you use to run your on-premises infrastructure. This variant delivers the entire VMware Software-Defined Datacenter (SDDC) - compute, storage, and networking infrastructure - to run on-premises using AWS Outposts and allows you to take advantage of the ease of management and integration with AWS services.
